South Australian businesses win big with $15 billion in local government contracts

The state government’s commitment to local procurement has awarded over $15 billion in contracts to South Australian businesses.

The state government is bringing significant benefits to South Australian businesses by shifting focus toward local procurement, resulting in over $15 billion in contracts being awarded to local businesses since 2022. By May 2025, a huge $5.18 billion in contracts were distributed amongst these businesses, making SA businesses now account for 91 per cent of government procurement.

This shift comes as a result of policy adjustments that prioritise local suppliers in government contract allocations, making sure that the local economy and workforce directly benefit from government spending.

The impact of these policy changes is further evidenced today at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, where approximately 1000 individuals are expected at the Meet the Buyer event. This initiative is organised by the Office of the Industry Advocate and conducted in partnership with the South Australian Business Chamber. Meet the Buyer provides a platform for businesses to engage directly with government buyers and key decision-makers, aiming to ease the procurement process for local businesses and expand their network within government contracting spheres.

The Meet the Buyer event brings representatives from over 40 State Government departments and public entities, alongside major project head contractors, industry associations, and local government representatives. This gathering is a crucial setting for businesses to gain insights into the procurement opportunities available and prepare effectively to secure government contracts.

Treasurer Stephen Mullighan shared, “Local businesses are the big winners from this Government’s commitment to look local first, cashing in on more than $15 billion in government contracts.

“The Meet the Buyer event is an opportunity to give even more local companies a helping hand, so they are best placed to win government contracts and tenders.”

John Chapman OAM, Industry Advocate, said, “It is crucial that Government provide that commercial bridge to the business community and this has been reflected in a significant lift in Meet the Buyer registrations this year.

“As these figures released today show, there are enormous opportunities for businesses to secure government contracts and the Meet the Buyer event opens that door.”

Andrew Kay, CEO of the South Australian Business Chamber also shared, “The scope of works being undertaken across South Australia is opening up more opportunities for local business than ever before.

“For many businesses, partnering with Government is a new frontier and we are regularly contacted by operators seeking information on how they can participate.”
