The South Australian Music Awards have announced their 2024 finalists, once again celebrating the hottest local music talent in SA. This year, a record-breaking 693 nominations were received across Major Award and Industry categories, as well as 269 artists nominated for the People’s Choice Award.
As one of the highlights of MusicSA’s Good Music Month, the awards night will be held at the Dom Polski Centre on Thursday, November 7th, to celebrate and showcase the exceptional talent from South Australia’s uniquely dynamic music scene.
Christine Schloithe, CEO of MusicSA, said this year has seen a “record number of nominations”.
“It’s clear that South Australian contemporary music continues to grow, innovate, and punch above its weight locally and nationally,” she said.
“We are so very proud to celebrate and amplify the achievements of these artists and music businesses, and we look forward to what promises to be a spectacular night.”
Leading the Major Award category is Swapmeet, an emerging rock four-piece band, who have been nominated for Best Song, Best New Artist, Best Group, and Best Release after a successful year highlighted by debut EP Oxalis.
Following with three nods for Major Awards each are electronic music producer Motez, singer-songwriter Aleksiah (who performed at the 2023 awards ceremony) and local favourites DEM MOB. Nominated for Best Release is Motez’s Coalesce EP, featuring the powerhouse single ‘Make Way’, which is up for Best Song.
Additionally, some first-time nominees have been added to the list, demonstrating the ongoing development of SA’s flourishing musical community. Local noise-rock extraordinaires The Genevieves are finalists for Best Song with their recent single Adore You, which will be contending with releases from Molly Rocket, The Tullamarines, and Motez.
Post-punk outfit Coldwave also received a nomination for Best Release up against rock and roll stalwarts West Thebarton for their new album Mongrel Australia.
Notable nods across the Industry Award categories include multi-award-winning Ryan Martin John, who received three nominations for Best Studio/Engineer, Best Live Technician, and Best Studio for his recording studio Cactus Cactus Sound.
Space Jams festival also received a nomination for Best Regional Music Venue, Festival, or Event.
For the first time ever, the Industry Awards will feature a category for Best Live Music Photograph, recognising the fantastic work of local gig documentarians.
The 2024 SA Music Awards ceremony promises a night of glitz, glamour, and outstanding music, including the live induction of a South Australian Music Hall of Famer. Presenters and performers will be announced in the coming weeks.
The People’s Choice Awards, hosted by TheMusic.com.au and The Note, are now open for public voting until Tuesday, October 22. You can read the full list of nominations here.
