Grünthal Brewery, a must-visit destination in Verdun, has put South Australia on the map, with their SA Pale Ale winning the gold medal in the International Pale Ale Class at this year’s Royal Adelaide Beer & Cider Awards.
But the awards didn’t stop there, Grünthal also walked away with bronze medals for their Belgian Dark, Belgian Raspberry Blond, and Session Ale, competing against 32 outstanding entries.
The RABCA, the core of the Australian and New Zealand beer and cider scene since its 1844 beginning and its 2010 relaunch, continues to set the standard with thirteen trophies across a diverse range of categories.
This year’s judging was rigorous, with twenty expert judges spending two days evaluating each entry. The event featured a Master Class by beer experts Jayne Lewis and Briony Liebich, who introduced the WSET approach to beer tasting and judging.
Each beer is judged in isolation against international style guides, ensuring a fair and thorough assessment. The blind tasting method ensures that judges focus solely on the beer’s appearance, flavour, and aroma, forcing them to evaluate the beers from the perspective of a consumer.
Beers scoring 17 points or more earn a gold medal, those scoring between 15.5 and 16.9 points receive silver, and scores between 14 and 15.4 points are awarded bronze. The top-scoring beer in each category takes home the trophy, with silver medallists up for grabs if no gold is awarded.
Grünthal’s win at RABCA is a win for the whole state. It not only showcases the talent within SA, but also shines a spotlight on the vibrant and evolving craft beer scene here.
Despite the industry’s recent challenges, including rising costs of raw materials and supply chain issues, the 2024 RABCA saw a remarkable turnout. Brewers across Australia and New Zealand have continued to innovate and excel, proving their persistence and creativity through tough times.
