South Australian shiraz named best in the world at coveted London Wine Competition

Renowned Clare Valley winery clinched ‘Shiraz of the Year’ at the London Wine Competition released last week, adding to their slew of awards.

South Australia’s Clare Valley is no stranger to world-class wine, but its reputation has just been elevated once more, with family winery Taylors winning ‘Shiraz of the Year’ at the prestigious London Wine Competition for its 2023 Jaraman Shiraz.

The event, which concluded last week, saw Taylors triumph over competitors from renowned wine regions including France, Portugal, Chile, and New Zealand.

The London Wine Competition evaluates wines on their quality, value, and packaging, aiming to reflect the preferences and expectations of the end consumer.

The panel consists of over 70 experts from the wine industry, including 10 Masters of Wine and four Master Sommeliers. Taylors’ Jaraman Shiraz managed to impress with its rich and complex profile, which the judges recognised as superior in its category.

According to the winery’s Managing Director and third-generation Winemaker, Mitchell Taylor, the accolade is particularly meaningful due to the consumer-centric nature of the competition.

“Our wines are crafted for wine lovers worldwide to share over a meal with friends or to celebrate special occasions, so having a consumer-centred contest like the London Wine Competition recognises that in our Jaraman Shiraz is a really exciting achievement,” he said.

Taylors isn’t new to the spotlight and the 2023 vintage continues a stellar run for the label.

Last year’s drop took out the Champion Red Wine Trophy at the VINUS International Wine & Spirits Competition and recieved near-perfect 99 points. And more recently, it claimed three major trophies at the Monterey International Wine Competition in California, including Wine of the Year (Import) and Best Shiraz.

Earlier this year, their $22 bottle of Sauvignon Blanc 2024 also went up against the best in the world and was awarded the Best of Show Australia White trophy at the 36th annual Mundus Vini Grand International Wine Awards held in Germany.

Retailing at $34, the 2023 vintage is a full-bodied wine that combines fruit from both the Clare Valley and McLaren Vale. It boasts a rich tapestry of flavours, with notes of blackberry, vibrant red fruit, dark chocolate, and is balanced by lively acidity.

Australian wines performed strongly across the board at this year’s competition. The 2021 Little giant The Remarkables Shiraz (from 105-year-old Barossa vines) was recognised for Best Wine by Packaging, while Beyond the Wilderness Riesling recieved the Own Label of the Year.

The 2023 Jaraman Shiraz is available at select fine wine retailers, through Taylors’ Clare Valley cellar door or online, perfect for your next dinner party or just a mid-week moment of indulgence.

South Australia continues to show the world it knows how to do Shiraz right, and Taylors is leading the charge. Further details on the competition and available products can be found on the official Taylor’s and London Wine Competition websites.
