The South Australian Starz had mixed results at the first day of the Australian Softball Championships, in Mirrabooka, Western Australia, beating the ACT Diamonds 3-0 before going down 2-1 to NSW Firestars.

Against the Diamonds, South Australia scored a run in the second inning and two in the fourth in a well-pitched contest. Belinda White led the Starz with three hits, while Monica Perry (pictured) pitched four frames for no hits and four strikeouts.

It was straight into the second game soon after the victory, with a poor start proving costly, as NSW scored twice in the first inning off three hits but only managed one more hit for the game.

Alicia Herron breathed hope into the contest when she belted a home run for the Starz in the penultimate inning, the sixth.

South Australian starting pitcher Vanessa Stokes lasted four frames, conceding just the opening inning three hits and two runs, for three strikeouts.

Monday’s games sees the Starz play Victorian Titans at 1pm and Queensland Heat at 5pm.
