South Australian wineries have had entire vintages wiped out by the severe frosts. Here’s how you can help them.

Vineyards across South Australia have been wiped out by the “worst frost in 55 vintages” decimating wineries and growers. Here’s some of the impacted wineries, and how you can help.

The recent frosts have had a devastating impact on many of South Australia’s cherished wineries (read more about that here), leading to significant losses in their vineyards. These wineries, often family-run and deeply rooted in their communities, are now facing challenges that threaten their livelihoods. We’ve asked the wineries to share how the frosts have impacted them to help our wider community understand just what’s happened, along with how you can support these businesses and ensure that they continue to thrive. This is by no means a complete list, but it will give you somewhere to start, if you’d like to help.

For wineries who want to be included in the guide, please fill out details here.

Also, please spare a thought for the affected growers, as this has impacted their entire source of income.

919 Wines

Impact: “We have lost 100% of our Glossop vineyard, and 20% of our Loxton vineyard. Our Glossop vineyard has all our specialist varieties for our 919 Reserve label, including our fortified wines, Durif, and award-winning Touriga Nacional. Our Loxton vineyard has specialist varieties and new plantings that were impacted. We have saved the Shiraz and Chardonnay for our Ella Semmler’s Orchard label, but not the Tempranillo, so there will be no Tempranillo in 2025. Our contract winemaking customers have lost significant portions of their vineyards, so we won’t be making wine for them this coming vintage.”

How to Help: “Visit our cellar door in the Riverland. Buy wine online from us. We are offering free shipping on all orders until 31 October.”

Address: 39 Hodges RD Glossop

Atzes Corner Wines

Impact: “While it’s difficult to gauge exactly, we estimate losses around 80-90% of our Northern Barossa vineyards, where most of our family’s vineyards are, due to the severe frosts. Some of our top-quality A-grade blocks have been completely wiped out. Friday the 13th took some, but the majority was hit hard on Tuesday the 17th, with the frost on Wednesday the 18th taking the rest. In 35 years of growing in the Northern area, we’ve never faced frosts this damaging. Fortunately, our Nuriootpa block, where the Cellar Door and old vines are, were spared.”

How to Help: “Head up to the Barossa and visit cellar doors specifically from wineries affected by the frost. Supporting these wineries would give the region a much-needed boost after such significant losses. Some of our family’s friends’ wineries that were hit include Izway, PaulMara, Kalleske, Westlake Vineyards, Epsilon, Lost Penny, and MSV. These are just a few that I’ve spoken to so far, but there are many more that could use your support during this challenging time.”

Address: 451 Research Rd, Nuriootpa SA 5355
More Info: Atzes Corner Wines

Bello Lugar Barossa

Curator Wine Co

Impact: “Since Thursday last week CWCO has lost 50-80% of our home Marananga Vineyard, wiping out most of our Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. On top of this our growers have been also hit, some worse than others but everyone will be effected by this frost event. From Eden Valley, Northern Barossa to the Valley Floor have all been hit as it seems to have no spared much.Frost has affected Curator Wine Co’s winery and vineyard in Marananga Barossa valley.”

How to Help: Buy online or book a tasting appointment or but in independent retail stores around Adelaide and SA.

Address: 28 Jenke Road, Marananga
More Info: Curator Wine Co

Elderton Wines

Impact: “Elderton Wines is a second-generation, family-owned winery, some of our vineyards are 130 years old. During the last week, we received devastating frost damage across our vineyards with nearly all of our old vine Shiraz vines being frost-damaged. Our Eden Valley Chardonnay vines were also effected and while it is too early to know, experience tells us that the result will likely be a 40% reduction in our Shiraz and Chardonnay yields during 2025 Vintage.  Shiraz is the jewel in the Barossa’s crown and the variety the Barossa is world renowned for, so it’s not surprising that Shiraz makes up for 70% of our production. At this stage of the growing cycle, we have already invested most of the capital required to maintain a vineyard and these costs will not be recouped.”

How to Help: “We’d love our South Australian community to support us and the many wine growers who have been hit hard by these destructive frosts. You can do this by purchasing wine online or by visiting our wine regions. Elderton cellar door is located just 1 hour north of Adelaide in the beautiful Barossa, and offers an idyllic tasting experience set amongst vineyard views.”

Kies Family Wines

Impact: “Michael Kies has seen 55 vintages, and has never seen a frost like this. The frost will have damaged a lot of growers throughout the regions. We saw a nice warm start to spring, and a strong budburst followed, only to be hit by two frosts in close succession. Kies Family Wines will produce very few 2025 vintage wines if any at all. After the China Tarrifs were introduced the industry has struggled and these once in a life time frosts are yet another blow. The best way to help is to seek out the small winemakers and go out to the regions to say hello! They will be thrilled to welcome all guests and show them their current wines.”

We have lost 80% of our vintage but still won’t know the true impact, and it could be even more. Its a huge hit to a family business.”

How to Help: “We have great range of wines to purchase on line. We offer tastings by appointment.”

Address: 538 Carrara hill road Ebenezer

Murray Street Vineyards

Impact: “Murray Street Vineyards has faced significant challenges due to the frost, which has affected their ability to produce wine at the expected levels this season.”Over the past week, we’ve experienced significant frost damage, which will greatly reduce our 2025 harvest. As Murray Street is 100% estate-grown and produced, using only our own fruit, this will have a substantial impact on the 2025 vintage.”

How to Help: “The best way to support Murray Street is by attending our upcoming Semillon and Rosé release event on October 12th or by booking a tasting online. We’d love to see you—come and visit!”

The Seamstress Wine Co.

Impact: “As grape growers on the Barossa Valley floor, 2023 was a devastating year for us. Our entire vintage failed to ripen, forcing us to drop the fruit on the ground—at our own cost. This heartbreak was compounded by the loss of our grape contract of over 20 years.

“Last year we were unable to find a home for all our fruit, so instead of dropping fruit on the ground for a second year – my husband and I launched The Seamstress Wine Co., producing a Semillon (from our 75 yo vines) and a Shiraz Mataro (release in 2025). Our Semillon recently won *Best White Wine of Show* at the Marananga Wine Show, giving us a much-needed boost.

“But just as we felt that we could finally see the light, frost events last week destroyed over 80% of our vineyard, leaving us devastated once again.

“I’m not sure how we recover from this to be honest.”

How to Help: “Please hop online and grab a six pack of our trophy winning 2024 semillon! We would be so appreciative”

Nurihannam Wines – Nuriootpa High School

Impact: “The recent frost has significantly impacted the majority of our school vineyard and surrounding areas, which will affect our commercial winery operations. While it won’t impact us as severely as others in the industry, as our main focus is education, it will still present challenges. Our winery relies heavily on the generous support of local growers who donate their grapes, and next year will be especially difficult for donations since many of the valley’s growers have been hard hit by the frost. We deeply empathize with those who have supported us through the years and understand that it will be difficult to ask for donations when many are facing their own hardships. Though our primary business is education, the effects of this frost will ripple through our program and the broader community.”

How to Help: “We would be incredibly grateful for the community’s support as we navigate the challenges ahead due to the recent frost. While our primary focus is education, the impact on local growers and businesses is deeply felt, and we want to encourage everyone to come together during this tough time. Here are a few ways you can support both our school and the wider community:

Buy Our School Wine: Purchasing wine from our school winery is one way to support our program directly. Every bottle sold helps sustain our educational initiatives and commercial operations. You can buy online [insert link].

Support Local Businesses: While we deeply appreciate any support for our school, we also encourage everyone to help local growers and businesses in the valley who have been impacted by the frost. Whether it’s buying from local producers, attending local events, or simply spreading the word, every bit helps.

Volunteer or Get Involved: If you’re passionate about agriculture, winemaking, or just supporting local initiatives, consider volunteering or getting involved with our vineyard and winery activities. We always welcome those willing to contribute time or resources to our program.

The upcoming months will be tough on many businesses that rely on strong vintages, and it’s heartbreaking to see the damage to our vineyards. We want to reiterate how much your support—whether buying our wine or helping the valley as a whole—means to us and the entire community. Let’s come together to help each other through this challenging time.

Wonderground and Mirus Vineyards

Impact: “Even though it is early to tell and still early in the frost season, we lost around 20% on the Mirus site in Seppeltsfield while our vineyard on Neldner Road, Marananga was completely wiped out 100%.”

“This doesn’t just affect us as growers and winemakers it affects our whole community, our fantastic vineyard teams and staff.”

How to help: visit and support the producers directly.

“Checking in with those you know in the regions as well, it will mean a lot. These frosts also affect other crops which were already suffering from drought conditions.

“As an art gallery and cellar door we aim to support a broad group within our community, supporting all forms of businesses helps support and supplement losses made.

“We are online but what we love is to meet new people join us in the gallery and cellar door Friday – Sunday 11-4pm”

Address: 130 Heinze Road, Seppeltsfield
