South Australia’s best sandwich has been awarded

Adelaide Central Market institution, Lucia’s Charcuterie, has been awarded the best sandwich in SA thanks to 2023’s delicious 100 list.

Gone are the days of the typical Aussie sando consisting of the basic ham, cheese, and tomato on white bread. This may have been what was packed in your school lunchbox back in the day, but the sandwich in Australia has undergone a substantial gourmet makeover—making it a beloved meal of choice to be enjoyed.

If you’re looking for a delicious sandwich here in SA, you need not look any further than Adelaide Central Market’s Lucia’s Charcuterie, which has recently been named South Australia’s best sandwich in this year’s delicious 100 list after over 12,000 foodies cast their votes across 20 different categories.

This SA institution has taken out the top spot in the prestigious sandwich category, followed by Bottega’s Bandito in Prospect coming in 2nd place, Favourite Fillings in Adelaide in 3rd, Our Boy Roy in Clarence Park in 4th and Rodeo in Norwood rounding out the group in 5th.

Located next to Lucia’s Fine Foods in the historic Adelaide Central Market, panini making has become an art form at this dining hot spot and features a selection of fresh paninis, baguettes and ciabattas filled with various high-quality ingredients. Picture salumi, sliced to order, laid in crusty rolls enriched with olive oil, ripe summer tomatoes, and basil—it’s a delicious combo that’s hard to resist, but you can’t go past the number one fave, the panini with prosciutto and mozzarella.

Lucia’s has been a cornerstone of the Adelaide Central Market, offering authentic Southern Italian cuisine for decades. A true family business, it owes its origins to the late Lucia Rosella, who opened Lucia’s Pizza and Spaghetti Bar back in 1957. Her legacy continues to inspire the team to champion dishes that celebrate local produce and fresh flavours, which keeps locals and out-of-towners coming back for more.

From breakfast to lunch and even catering, the team at Lucia’s is committed to quality and value, constantly curating a selection of the finest and newest food products from around the globe and Australia.

Whether you choose from one of their panini favourites, try their daily special or customise your own, each sandwich is made with love and passion and will make you feel like you’re on the streets of Italy—where sandwiches aren’t just food but works of art.

Lucia’s also serves up breakfast Monday to Friday until 11:30 am, a selection of sweets available all day, and delicious antipasto, pizzas, pasta, salads and main meals for lunch from 11:30 and offers a selection of takeaway options and products so you can recreate these fine Italian flavours at home.

The recognition of Lucia’s Charcuterie in this year’s delicious 100 list is a celebration of the evolution of the sandwich here in South Australia. From a humble beginning to now a gourmet delicacy, Lucia’s sandwiches have become a favourite for a reason, and this family business represents a legacy from the south of Italy that has continued to delight customers for more than 60 years.
