Following International Women’s Day over the weekend, last night, South Australia celebrated the exceptional individuals, clubs, and organisations dedicated to empowering girls and women in sport at The Power of Her 2025 Recognition Awards.

Hosted by Netball SA in partnership with the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing, this event at the ‘March Forward’ gathering was a showcase of efforts to promote gender equality in sports.

The awards are just one part of The Power of Her, the Malinauskas Government’s ongoing tribute to the legacy of the Matildas’ historic FIFA Women’s World Cup run. The Power of Her is inspiring wide-reaching impacts in sports through $18 million dedicated to building and improving facilities and organising programs specifically aimed towards boosting female participation over three years.

Katrine Hildyard MP, Minister for Women and the Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence shared “When we see women celebrated for their strength and talent, it gives us an opportunity to shift attitudes about women and the roles they can play.

“A massive congratulations to these incredible South Australians who are progressing change through sport in a way that is making a difference in the lives of girls and women, and to the fabric of our community. Thank you for helping to create an equal future for girls and women and for strengthening our state through doing so.”

Topping the list of honorees was Jemma Tilley, who received The Power of Her Champion of Change award. As the head coach at Murraylands Gymnastics Academy, Tilley not only led the academy’s recovery post-2024 floods but also drove significant gender inclusivity initiatives at the academy.

The Emerging Leader award was jointly given to Chloe Mackenzie of the South East Women’s Cricket Association and Andriana Petrakis of Woodville Orion Tennis Club. Mackenzie was key in founding the first South East junior girls’ cricket group, significantly improving accessibility and enjoyment for young female cricketers. Petrakis, renowned for her relatable coaching style, has made notable strides in tennis, particularly for players with intellectual impairments and autism.

YMCA/SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre received The Power of Her Outstanding Organisation award for their commitment to creating a nurturing environment for female patrons, including initiatives like the free provision of period products to combat stigma and participation barriers.

Local football and athletics clubs were not left out. The Adelaide Jaguars Women’s Football Club was recognised as the Champion Local Club (Metropolitan) for their inclusive and nurturing approach towards female soccer players. Naracoorte & Districts Little Athletics clinched the same award for the regional category, buoyed by their female-focused programs and mentorship opportunities.

In the media category, Spacequake Sports was awarded for their expansive coverage and impactful broadcasting of women’s sport, notably softball, which has gained international attention.

The Hospital Research Foundation Group was distinguished as The Power of Her Partner Champion for their tireless support of women’s sports, particularly through their work with Netball SA and the Adelaide Thunderbirds.

Emily Bourke MLC, Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing said, “We are serious about backing women and girls in sport and determined to advance a legacy of equality and inclusion.

“These awards are a platform to share the stories of individuals and groups driving change and shifting attitudes while celebrating their incredible achievements.

“Congratulations to all The Power of Her Award winners – keep smashing barriers, challenging stereotypes and creating environments where all women and girls feel safe and included.”

The event was not only a celebration of current achievements but also a motivator for continued effort towards gender equality in sports across South Australia.
