Move aside France, South Australian cheesemaker Kris Lloyd has just won a top prize at the World Championship Cheese contest in the US.
A self-taught cheese maker, Lloyd has been at the helm of Woodside Cheese Wrights in the Adelaide Hills since 1994, honing her skills and passion for cheese-making.
However, it was in 2014 that Lloyd recognised an opportunity to expand her cheese-making horizons.
Drawing on her extensive culinary career and encounters with exceptional cheeses, she founded Kris Lloyd Artisan. This new venture allowed her to introduce a diverse range of premium products alongside her cheeses, further solidifying her position as a prominent figure in the industry.
Under the Kris Lloyd Artisan banner, Lloyd’s cheeses have garnered multiple awards and accolades, cementing their reputation for excellence. From fresh cheeses to white-mold varieties and aged specialties, her creations sourced from cow, goat, and buffalo milk have captivated cheese enthusiasts worldwide.
At the recent World Championship Cheese contest in the US, Lloyd’s success not only showcased her individual talent but also highlighted the quality and innovation present in Australian cheese-making. The World Championship Cheese contest is one of the largest competitions of its kind in the world, 53 judges evaluated more than 3000 entries over the three-day event. It’s been hosted by the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association biennially since 1957.
Kris Lloyd’s Flower Power variety, crafted with 100 per cent buffalo milk, emerged victorious taking out the top prize in the highly competitive Open Class: Milk Cheese category. It has a soft, pliable texture given to the cheese from the secondary flora, and has a rich texture and nutty flavour, grassy notes and hints of native thyme.
It won alongside other notable creations like Buffalo Persian Feta Lemon Myrtle and Persian Buffalo Feta cheeses which scored second and third.
Established as a family-owned artisan cheese factory, Woodside Cheese Wrights has been the cornerstone of Lloyd’s journey.
Now, with Kris Lloyd Artisan, she continues to push boundaries and redefine the standards of excellence in cheese-making.
