South Australia’s most dangerous roads revealed

South Australia’s Risky Roads survey has named the states most dangerous roads and intersections.

South Australia’s most hazardous roads and intersections have been identified through a public vote in RAA’s Risky Roads survey. Curtis Road, between Munno Para and Angle Vale, has taken out the top spot, being named as the riskiest, with significant community concerns over congestion and safety.

Curtis Road is also home to the state’s riskiest intersection at Heaslip Road in Angle Vale. This junction topped the intersection category for the second consecutive survey. Additionally, the corner of Curtis and Andrews Roads is noted as another challenging intersection, ranking second.

The survey garnered more than 1,800 nominations, with the responses used by RAA to push for necessary infrastructure enhancements.

Following close on the list, Victor Harbor Road claimed the title of the riskiest regional road due to its poor maintenance and inadequate layout south of McLaren Vale. It leads the entries among Fleurieu Peninsula roads in the top ten regional precarious roads, followed by Main South Road, and Main Road between McLaren Vale and Willunga.

Detailed collision data for Curtis Road reveals a troubling scenario, with 143 crashes reported from 2019 to 2023, in which individuals were either injured or killed. The accident rate has escalated with a 21 per cent increase in traffic volume since 2017, bringing the daily vehicle count to over 24,000.

Recent developments include the announcement of $30 million in government funding for a dual lane roundabout at Curtis and Heaslip Roads intersection, which aims to address these concerns. Furthermore, a $125 million federal budget allocation is set to remove the level crossing on Curtis Road. While temporary measures like line marking changes at Curtis and Andrews Roads’ intersection have improved traffic flow, RAA advocates for a long-term solution—duplicating Curtis Road.

RAA Senior Traffic Engineer Matt Vertudaches said, “At RAA we want to advocate for safer roads and safer communities, and our Risky Roads survey is a key study that helps us identify areas of concern.

“Clearly, drivers in the northern suburbs aren’t satisfied with the condition of many of their roads – seven of the top 10 metro roads were located north of Adelaide.

“This result was not unexpected, and reinforces RAA’s calls for infrastructure investment in the northern suburbs following the Northern Adelaide Transport Study.”

RAA continues to advocate for targeted infrastructure investments across South Australia, particularly in the northern suburbs, to address traffic and safety challenges revealed in their comprehensive Risky Roads survey. This initiative highlights critical areas while also striving to influence governmental actions for safer and more efficient road networks.
