Richmond’s PATIO Coffee Roasters is hosting the exciting South Australian AeroPress Championship this July, bringing 24 local competitors to face off using the unique AeroPress method to create their perfect cup of coffee.
This competition will see PATIO’s cafe-style cellar door transformed into the ultimate venue, with approximately 80 guests anticipated to attend.
The AeroPress device is the brainchild of retired Stanford University engineering instructor Alan Adler, and has totally changed the coffee brewing scene since its invention in 2005. Known for its simplicity and efficiency, the AeroPress quickly rose to fame for its ability to brew rich, clean, and flavoursome coffee.
The South Australian championship is a critical part of the international AeroPress circuit, leading up to the prestigious World AeroPress Championship. This global contest started modestly in Oslo in 2008 with just three participants and has since expanded globally. The competition now celebrates coffee in over 60 countries, involving over 5,000 participants annually. The finals this year are scheduled for December 5th and 6th in Seoul.
Tim Williams, the Director of Melbourne’s Fieldwork Coffee, leads the World AeroPress Championship. He has been influential in maintaining the competition’s independent character. Working with Tim is Creative Director Grant Gamble, who brings his vision from Culture Coffee Project and Leaderboard: The Coffee Game.
Basil Papas, the founding director of PATIO Coffee Roasters, is excited to welcome the event. “PATIO is beyond excited to host the SA AeroPress Championship, he said.
“We value community and simple pleasures, and this celebratory event will unite both competitors and spectators for the love of brewing specialty coffee. We extend a warm thank you to our incredible sponsors: Harvest Town Coffee, La Marzocco, The Alternative Dairy Company, Sublime Catering, and Big Shed Brewing.”
As the competition day approaches, PATIO Coffee Roasters is preparing to make this a memorable experience for everyone involved. It’s an opportunity for both seasoned aficionados and newcomers to witness coffee-making that combines tradition and innovation, and a day where creativity, connection, and coffee come together.
