Spanish Film Festival Review: My Big Night

It’s full-on pandemonium, glitz & fun when a TV network’s annual New Year’s Eve spectacular begins falling apart little more than a week after planning begins.

My Big Night is a night like no other: full of pandemonium, glitz and fun. There are multiple storylines to keep an audience laughing and a cracker of an ending.

It may be October, but a TV network’s annual New Year’s Eve spectacular has already been in production for an exhausting week and a half, and setbacks have accumulated. A falling crane has just taken out an extra, and the show’s hosts are at war with each other.

Superstud pop sensation Adán (Mario Casas) discovers he’s been taken in by a semen thief, while legendary divo Alphonso (Raphael) is being stalked by an armed and would-be songwriter (Jaime Ordóñez).

Amongst the extras, a bewildered, short, endearing José (Pepón Nieto) is discovering first love with the gorgeous Paloma (Blanca Suárez), but she has a history of accidentally injuring or killing every man she meets. Meanwhile, just outside the studio, riot police move in as demonstrators picket for the arrest of the show’s corrupt producer (Santiago Segura).

There is not a weak link in the cast, however I enjoyed a number of  performances particularly: Mario Casas with flowing blond hair channeled every oversexed pop singer to perfection. Also notable were Hugo Silva and Carolina Bang as the hosts of the spectacular – their battle for supremacy of the small screen was hysterically funny, all for the prize of being the host of Survivors.

Lastly, there is the legendary Raphael playing a parody of himself right down to the Liberace robes and the hyperbaric chamber in his dressing room. He proved he is not only an accomplished singer but also a very funny comedian.

Director and co-writer Alex de la Iglesia ensured that the pace stayed at breakneck speed, essential for a spoof of what could be Eurovision. The numerous rapid cuts and swift action accentuated the comedy elements in the film perfectly.

A special mention must be made of the dance routines which were worthy of any Las Vegas revue, sumptuously costumed and brilliantly choreographed.

So, have a special meal at a restaurant and then treat yourself to My Big Night, you won’t be sorry!
