Speakers at the Opening Ceremony will include the Federal Minister for Sport, Kate Ellis and the Games will be official declared open by the Governor of South Australia.

‘Athletes, supporters, families, volunteers and anyone else can come together at the opening ceremony to recognise and show their support as we celebrate the opening of the Special Olympics Australia IX National Games,’ comments Jenny Daly, Special Olympics National Games Director. ‘We are delighted by the support from these high profile and professional entertainers – many of whom have volunteered their time to be a part of it.’

Sponsored by Santos, the Opening Ceremony is just the start of the week of competition for over 800 athletes with an intellectual disability.

They will compete in 12 sports in venues across Adelaide and locals are encouraged to come and support our South Australian athletes as they hope to not only go for Gold, but be selected to compete in the Special Olympics World Games in Athens next year.

‘Just be sure to bring your tissues to the opening ceremony as it is bound to be an emotional and truly moving event for all those who attend,’ adds Ms Daly.

The Closing Ceremony will also take place at the same location on Friday 23 April and will feature former Australian Idol contestant Toby Moulton.
