A Spectroscope is defined as an optical instrument which separates light into its component colours.

Set to the ethereal music of Iceland’s Sigur Ros, artist Megan Dennis has devised and performs a short ballet of light that says nothing and goes nowhere but is soothing and, at times, mesmerising.

She stands behind a white scrim where her outline is barely visible. Using a combination of cloth, glow sticks, and cellophane, she presents a kaleidoscope of movement and colour projected onto the screen by torch or light.

Sadly, the presentation needs more planning. The audience enter in the dark, which is dangerous, and those seated to the sides unfortunately witness both the shadow play and what’s going on behind the scenes. The cellophane crinkles, and the lights click on and off, both a distraction from the otherwise restful presentation.

It’s exciting to see that such experimental works are still in the offering during a Fringe. It’s this adventurous spirit that helped to make the Fringe what it is today. Perhaps the use of projected words would theme this show and give it meaning. Perhaps some variation of pace would add excitement and intrigue. The makings of a show are already there and with more thought and direction, this piece may be worth revisiting at a future time.
