Strawberry picking season launches at Beerenberg

Strawberries are ripe for the picking at Beerenberg, with their strawberry patch opening early for the season.

Well, hello sunshine and hello strawberries- the 2023 strawberry season has sprung early at Beerenberg Family Farm.

There’s nothing better than handpicking a fresh bunch of strawberries on a warm summer’s day and Beerenberg’s strawberry patch is packed with sweetness. If you’ve never experienced the joy of biting into a freshly picked strawberry, or if you’re an annual strawberry picker, Beerenberg is the place to be.

Beerenberg began running strawberry picking sessions in 1975 and since then, their farm has been a go-to strawberry paradise. Thousands of families, couples and friends leap at the opportunity to hunt for that perfect juicy, sweet strawberry every season.

Going to pick strawberries is a great way to spend some time in the Spring sunshine with friends and family- and is a great way to get out and about during the school holidays, too.

Planning a visit? Here’s your strawberry-picking guide:

  • First things first: A quick peek at the top right-hand corner of our homepage will let you know if our patches are welcoming visitors for the day.
  • Ready, Set, Go: Once here, head straight to the Farm Shop. For just $5, you will get a wristband and picking containers (kiddos 12 and under? They’re on the house).
  • Follow the Berries: Keep an eye out for the red flag guiding you to a strawberry wonderland, then dive in and pick to your berry-loving heart’s delight. It is advised to wear comfortable shoes, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen.
  • Strawberries Galore: After you’ve had your fill, head back to the shop and pay for the weight of the berries you picked. Strawberries are priced at a juicy $11.95/kg.

While you’re there, be sure to snap some photos and tag them with #pickmebeerenberg. Who knows, you might just score a hamper filled with Beerenberg delights.

The best strawberries are ripe and ready for the picking when at least three quarters of the berry’s surface has turned from green to red. To ensure you don’t damage the berry or the plant, the best way to pick strawberries is to simultaneously pull and twist the fruit using your thumb and forefinger.

Freshly picked strawberries will last well in the fringe for up to three days. If you can’t quite finish them all, the Beerenberg website does host an array of recipes if you want to freeze your berries to make jam or sweet treats later down the line.

When planning your strawberry picking experience, visit the Beerenberg website to confirm the patch is open on your desired date. Occasionally the patch will close for a few days if all the ripe strawberries have been ‘picked out’ and the plants need time for their green, young fruit to ripen. The patch may also close if there has been a particularly long spell of hot weather or if there is a fire warning in the area.

So, be sure to swing by the Beerenberg Family Farm for some fresh country vibes and pick those delightful strawberries during the sunny seasons.
