Today a press conference was held with Professor Nicola Spurrier about the state of COVID-19 across Australia, from a South Australian perspective.
She began by giving an update on SA’s COVID-19 situation. There are no new cases today in South Australia, however genomics are back from a UK traveller in quarantine, and we now have a traveller who has the variant that is more transmissible from the UK – making it 2 cases in total.
There are 580 cases, 10 active cases, all of which are international travellers in medi-hotels.
Over 5000 tests were done yesterday.
In Victoria, it’s been 13 days since they found the first cases in that State. Professor Nicola Spurrier is speaking to them one to two times daily to stay across their situation.
South Australians must remain alert but not alarmed.
While it’s concerning for Victorians, their situation remains relatively stable. There are currently 21 cases, primarily from the Thai restaurant, with the rest linked to close contacts. All of their primary close contacts (over 200) have been contacted already and are all in quarantine. Two of those people are in quarantine in South Australia, and have tested negative.
In addition Victoria is doing what South Australia did, and they’re finding secondary close contacts, that is close contacts of close contacts, and they are being put in quarantine as well.
Given that situation, it’s important for South Australians, and particularly people who have travelled from Victoria, or Victorians travelling in South Australia, to keep looking at the Victorian COVID-19 website for the live updates to sites of concern. This should be done daily or even twice daily. All of those people are also receiving text messages from SA Health to keep them across the situation.
South Australians should reconsider all travel to Victoria, and have flexibility around their plans over the next few days.
SA Health want to see an increase in testing from Victorians coming to South Australia or South Australians returning from Victoria. Professor Spurrier is encouraging people to get tested who have symptoms, including feeling tired, feeling flat, cold symptoms, vomiting, diarrhoea, acute loss of taste or smell. This includes families of those who have travelled from Victoria.
Please quarantine and get tested if you’ve been at any of the below sites in Victoria.

Royal Brighton Yacht Club – outdoor dining
Holy Family Parish Doveton Catholic
Village Century City showing of Wonderwoman on December 28
Woodlands Golf Club – club bar, 23 & 28 December
