St Kilda Adventure Playground celebrating 40th birthday with free activities & scavenger hunt

The event will see kite flying demonstrations, virtual reality experiences, nature play activities and more.

From a former rubbish dump on the shores of the Barker Inlet to a multi-generational family destination – the St Kilda Adventure Playground has become a place dear to the hearts of South Australians.

Ever since its creation on 24th October 1982, St Kilda has stood out from the crowd, due to its sheer size and elaborate equipment, unlike anything else seen before in SA.

Originating as the brainchild of a Lions Club member in the mid to late 70s, the adventure playground features a huge castle with slides and a draw bridge, flying foxes, a large Volcano with multiple slides, and a pirate shipwreck.

Now celebrating its 40th birthday, families will be flocking to the landmark this weekend (Sunday 23 October), for a FREE event filled with adventure-based activities, including a scavenger hunt.

In partnership with the Salisbury Lions Club, the event will see kite flying demonstrations, virtual reality experiences with the Marine Discovery Centre, activations from the St Kilda Tramway Museum and a mobile junk and nature playground.

There will also be nature play activities throughout the day, including geocaching, tinkering and potion making, seed bombs, bee hotels and more.

When you eventually need a break from all the fun, there will also be a sausage sizzle, drinks and food trucks available on premises, including Golden Grove Lions donuts, Spuds & More, Cuppagino’s coffee and hotdogs, and Tackle and Tucker ice cream cart and café.

The playground underwent a $3.5 million overhaul in 2016, which saw the installation of new attractions, extra slides, electric barbeques, the basketball court, and a makeover of the Cockle Street entrance. If you and your kids are yet to experience the St Kilda Adventure Playground, now is the perfect time.
