Draped in an ostrich feather, beaded tassel skirt and tulle bodice, Australian opera soprano Jessica Mills, graces the red carpet of Adelaide’s Her Majesty’s Theatre, with her Paolo Sebastian design inspired by the 1940s starlets of the silver screen.
Jessica’s appearance in South Australia is in line with the newest announcement by State Opera South Australia of its next musical theatre, Bright Lights and Big Dreams.
The two-night season in November boasts a star-studded cast, including the return of Ben Mingay and Antoinette Halloran, along with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, to perform all the greats from Rodgers & Hammerstein through to Bernstein and Sondheim.
Adelaide audiences have a strong love affair with musicals, proven by the huge success of Carousel in concert, the record-breaking season of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street last year and the current showing of La Traviata, which opened last week to rave reviews.
State Opera Artistic Director, Stuart Maunder AM expressed his excitement in bringing the show to SA.
“We have pulled some of our favourites from Carousel and Sweeney Todd as well as hits from Oklahoma!, Candide, West Side Story to name a few.
“Some of the most memorable moments in my life have been underscored by these great composers and I know that’s the same for so many of us – it truly will be a wonderful night out,” Maunder said.
Some of State Opera’s well-loved singers will join Jessica Mills, Ben Mingay and Antoinette Halloran, including Desiree Frahn, Mark Oates, Rosie Hosking and Jessica Mills. Ben Mingay said he couldn’t wait to get back on stage again in Adelaide.
“Sweeney Todd was a dream role for me, and I’m super excited to perform again in Adelaide.
“This will be one of those ultimate concerts, working with phenomenal artists to showcase some of the best music in the world,” Mingay said.
Rosie Hosking agreed. “To experience the music of Sondheim, Bernstein, Rodgers, and Hammerstein with a full symphony orchestra is really something, it will be an immersive musical experience that fills your senses,” she said.
Bright Lights and Big Dreams rounds out a huge year for State Opera which started with an outdoor opera on Glenelg Beach, through to the dazzling new production of La Traviata.
“This music holds a special place in the hearts of myself and conductor Anthony Hunt. It gets inside our very being and transports us somewhere else entirely… It allows us to put words to feelings and moments much bigger than us, and we can’t wait to share this special concert with you,” Maunder said.
Don’t miss a great night out at State Opera’s Bright Lights and Big Dreams at Her Majesty’s Theatre.
Two performances only on 11 & 12 November 2022.
