A wise man once said, “dance like no one is watching” – a quote that has been used figuratively for years to encourage us to live in the moment and not be consumed by others’ opinions and expectations.
A beautiful sentiment to live by, the quote is now being taken quite literally by two local Adelaideans hoping to bring some fun into our mornings.
Every Wednesday morning, as the sun rises over the hills and the colours of the sky begin their own dance before your eyes, Sunny Daze Rave will be taking over Somerton Beach. Essentially a silent disco on the beach, participants will meet pre-dawn, pop their headphones in and simply dance, as a group, for as long as they like.
“It’s all about having fun,” says co-creator Krissy Alford. “We just wanted to create a space where people can come and let off steam and have some fun before they start their day.
“Life can often be so serious and structured so Sunny Daze is a light-hearted space where people can forget about all of that, have some fun and make some new friends in the process.”
A weekly event, the free silent disco is open to anyone and everyone, all you need is a pair of headphones and a Spotify account. All dancers will then sync into a pre-created playlist and let loose as the sun comes up.
“There is something so special about being up before the sun,” says Krissy. “Starting with low-light might also help people feel a bit more comfortable too because we know that it can be a little weird but that’s what it’s all about. Letting go of your inhibitions and dancing like no-one is watching.
“We’ve done a few test runs and we definitely attracted some attention but it was all positive! We mainly were just making people happy, everyone was smiling as they walked past and saw how much fun we were having.”
A simple idea at its core, the pre-morning rave has been making waves across the globe with thousands of people across Europe and the USA joining the craze with Melbourne and Sydney also jumping on board.
“I love the idea of people just going HAM in the morning and then going about their day,” Krissy says. “It’s energising and invigorating and just a beautiful way to start your morning.”
Being located on the beach, post-dance swims are highly encouraged, especially as the weather gets warmer.
Kicking off in the next few weeks, times will slightly change weekly to match with the time of the rising sun and will generally run for 45-60 minutes. Krissy and co-creator Sarah Fleetwood also have plenty of ideas to keep things interesting each week, with different themes and genres already banked up.
Sunny Daze Rave will take place each Wednesday morning at Somerton Beach in front of the Somerton Surf Life Saving Club
