State Opera’s sellout performance, Trial By Jury, added to 2023 Fringe program

State Opera South Australia has announced six performances of Gilbert & Sullivan’s one-act operetta Trial by Jury, which will be part of the 2023 Adelaide Fringe program.

The aperitif-sized opera, already sold out for its May 2023 season as part of G&S FEST, tells the story of Angelina, a bride left at the altar by her fiancé who is determined to get her revenge in court. The fact that the performance actually takes place in the Supreme Court rooms in Victoria Square seems to have attracted the interest of many, looking forward to enjoying witty lyrics, catchy tunes and irreverent jokes in this unusual (but perfectly fitting) show venue.

State Opera Artistic Director and one of the world’s foremost interpreters of Gilbert & Sullivan, Stuart Maunder AM said “I’m extremely pleased with the way audiences reacted to the release of G&S FEST. There is so much excitement and enthusiasm, and tickets are selling fast, months in advance.

“We are thrilled to be part of the Adelaide Fringe, the biggest arts festival in the Southern Hemisphere, and give more people the possibility to see this highly popular show.”

Gilbert & Sullivan or “G&S” as they are universally known created the British comedy opera in the 19th century. The pair gave rise to a great tradition of political satire, and their work shaped the development of musical theatre, political discourse, literature, film and advertising.

The G&S catalogue contains some 14 operas, including Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S. Pinafore, The Sorcerer (all available in the G&S FEST program in May 2023) and The Mikado (seen in Adelaide in 2019).

Tickets to the Adelaide Fringe events will be available for BankSA Cardholders on Monday 5 December and for the general public on Tuesday 6 December and there is no doubt they won’t last long. Be quick.
