State Theatre and Bell Shakespeare Join Farces..err..Forces

Comedy-of-ErrorsState Theatre Company of South Australia and Australia’s national Shakespeare company, Bell Shakespeare, will collaborate for the first time with a brand new co-production of Shakespeare’s effervescent, irreverent, and deliciously convoluted farce, The Comedy of Errors.

Shakespeare’s joyful comedy of mistaken identity follows the fortunes of not one but two sets of identical twins (Antipholus of Syracuse and Antipholus of Ephesus) and their man servants, each named Dromio. Accidentally separated in a shipwreck many years before then miraculously thrown together again in the town of Ephesus, this quartet of confusion find themselves in circumstances that provide escalating opportunities for rampant farce!

Beloved Adelaide actor Nathan O’ Keefe (Pinocchio, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)) is joined by a cast of Adelaide and Sydney’s best comic actors for the premiere season in Adelaide before heading across Australia on an extended six month tour of 31 cities, culminating in a season at the Sydney Opera House.

Founded in 1990, Bell Shakespeare has evolved from a theatre company dedicated to producing the plays of William Shakespeare in a relevant and exciting way, to the springboard from which the Company has dived into some extraordinary work. Through high quality touring productions and education programmes, Bell Shakespeare uses Shakespeare’s universal insights to bring inspiration and truth to minds living in an uncertain world. The Company is dedicated to connecting beauty and art with imaginations of all ages.

Award-winning director Imara Savage is a NIDA gradate and was the 2011 Director in Residence with Bell Shakespeare. She has also worked with Red Stitch, Griffin Theatre Company, Belvoir B Sharp, Sydney Theatre Company, Opera Australia and with NIDA’s Open Program. Imara has also worked in Sri Lanka as a writer with the Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development and has been involved with other Human Rights organisations including working as a facilitator for the Oxfam International Youth Parliament & the Amnesty Youth Drama Festival.
