Statewide extreme weather response in place as high winds, thunderstorms, extreme fire danger expected

South Australia is on high alert as severe weather, including thunderstorms and high winds, is forecast for Tuesday, with authorities activating a response to protect the homeless.

South Australia is bracing for severe weather with thunderstorms, high winds, and unusually hot conditions expected across the state on Tuesday, November 5th 2024. The weather forecast has prompted authorities to activate a severe weather response aimed specifically at supporting individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

The severe weather activation will be in operation from 6am to 6pm, spanning the whole of South Australia. During this period, individuals without shelter or those vulnerable to homelessness are urged to contact Homeless Connect SA on 1800 003 308, a service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Local service providers will also remain alert and are prepared to offer necessary assistance.

The weather situation appears particularly volatile. A sprawling area of low pressure over the northern part of South Australia combines with a ridge of high pressure moving eastward from the southern regions. This scenario will pave the way for a weakening low pressure system, and an associated trough from Western Australia, crossing South Australia on Tuesday afternoon. In response to this, there are also multiple cold fronts expected later in the week.

On Tuesday November 5th, the weather is set to deteriorate with isolated showers initiating in western parts and gradually spreading to central and eastern sections of the state. Gusty thunderstorms are forecasted to commence in the west early in the day and move towards eastern parts during the afternoon and evening. Severe weather with damaging winds expected in these regions, with the Eyre Peninsula also facing possible, similar conditions.

The elevated temperatures could result in areas of raised dust. This is particularly likely in the northern agricultural area and south of the Pastoral districts, potentially reducing visibility and worsening the conditions further. Overall, temperatures are predicted to be above average, turning significantly higher than usual in the northwestern parts of South Australia.

Alongside these weather threats, an Extreme Fire Danger warning has been issued for the West Coast fire weather district. Authorities advise residents to action their Bushfire Survival Plans. Key recommendations include closely monitoring fire and weather updates through local radio stations, official websites such as www.cfs.sa.gov.au and www.bom.gov.au, and contacting emergency services via 000 in case of life-threatening situations. This forecast of extreme fire danger is due to hot, dry temperatures coupled with strong north to northwesterly winds, which are expected to give way to a cooler southwesterly change come late evening.

Residents of Adelaide can expect a partly cloudy day with a medium chance of showers, primarily in the late morning and afternoon. A top of 30 is expected. Thunderstorms are possible, accompanied by winds initially easterly at 15 to 20 km/h, shifting north to northeasterly at 25 to 35 km/h towards the evening. For Tuesday’s full forecast click here.
