Sticky Situations – 2012 Adelaide Fringe

Presented by Trevor Jones for CABfringe
Reviewed Friday 2nd March 2012

The show starts with the sound of laboured breathing as the lights come up on Trevor Jones’s back. As he starts his first number, Come Together, accompanying himself on accordion, the audience gets an idea of where this show is going. Jones does a good job of setting the premise for the show, anecdotes of dating.

Jones, who is also very skilled at the piano, tells his stories well, using his iPad to illustrate points, and toy with the gay men in the neighbourhood, and easily adapts to the audience interaction. His singing is lovely and clear, even on some incredibly fast numbers, and his song selection of pop music, music theatre, more obscure works and new compositions fits well with the stories, and also elicits some audience participation.

Whilst the stories are from a gay man’s perspective, they are easily relatable to anyone of any gender and persuasion as we’ve all come across types that we decide to avoid. This commonality and his openness, enjoyment of telling his story and ability to laugh at himself draws people in. Once they are engaged, he gives a beautiful rendition two songs that show a deeper emotion and pain.

If you’ve ever been on a bad date, wondered how to get a date, wondered how gay men get dates, wanted to learn some new terminology, or simply wanted a fun night out with some hilarious stories and great music, this is the show for you.
