A strawberry and basil ice-cream (not pictured) has been named the Most Outstanding Exhibit in the 2019 SA Dairy Awards.
Made by South Australian ice-cream producer 48 Flavours, the ice-cream was described by judges as “well-balanced, with a great fresh basil flavour” and, despite its unusual flavour combination, could not be faulted.
This is the third year in a row 48 Flavours has won Champion Ice-Cream and Most Outstanding Dairy Exhibit at the Awards, having received the same two accolades for their Pear Gorgonzola Fig and Roasted Walnut Ice- Cream in 2017 and their Salted Pistacchio Ice-Cream in 2018.
Announced this evening at the 2019 South Australian Dairy Awards Gala Dinner, the awards recognised the achievements of Australia’s finest cheese-makers, creative chocolatiers and innovative dairy producers.
Other South Australian producers that received multiple trophies were Beston Global Foods Company (Champion Cheddar Cheese and Best Innovative Dairy Product) and Section28 Artisan Cheeses (Champion Hard or Semi-Hard Variety Other Than Cheddar and Champion SA Manufactured Cheese).
Other winners of the Awards included Vannella Cheese Handcrafted Stracciatella (Champion Soft Cheese), Kytren Ash Log Goat Cheese (Champion Cheese from Small Scale Dairy Producer), Brownes Greek Yoghurt (Champion Yoghurt), and Sungold Jersey Lite Milk (Champion Fresh Product).
Since 2006, the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia (RA&HS) has partnered with the Dairy Industry Association of Australia (DIAA) to present the awards, with all gold-medal trophy winners encouraged to enter the prestigious Australian Grand Dairy Awards which are announced in February 2020.
Dairy Products Committee Chairman Matthew Cooper said the Awards recognise the importance of Australia’s dairy industry.
“This year’s awards attracted 313 entries from 40 exhibitors across Australia, with all entries judged blind by an expert industry panel,” Mr Cooper said.
The trophies from this year’s Awards will be on display in the Dairy Food Hall during the Royal Adelaide Show, to be held 30 August to 8 September 2019 at Adelaide Showground.
