There’s nothing quite like biting into a freshly picked strawberry on a sunny day. Luckily, spring has sprung in the Adelaide Hills and with that comes the joy of picking your own strawberries at Beerenberg Farm.
Beerenberg’s strawberry patch is officially open for the season, and whether you are an experienced strawberry picker or have yet to try the joy of picking your own strawberries, Beerenberg is the place to be.
Beerenberg first began running strawberry picking sessions in the 70s and ever since, their farm has been a go-to destination in the warmer months for thousands each year as they hunt for that perfectly juicy, sweet strawberry.
Located only 30 minutes outside of the CBD in the beautiful town of Hahndorf, visiting the farm is the perfect way to spend a spring day.
Thinking of heading down? Here’s your step-by-step guide to strawberry picking:
- Check on the Beerenberg website to make sure the strawberry patch is open. Depending on the weather or if the patch is ‘picked out’, occasionally the patch is closed, so it’s best to double-check before you leave home.
- When you arrive at Beerenberg, head to the farm shop and pay the entry fee. Entry is $5 per person, and free for children 12 years and under. There you’ll be given a wristband and a cardboard picking container.
- Head out to the patch and pick to your heart’s content. Make sure to bring a hat and sunscreen for protection while you’re out in the sunshine!
- Once you have finished picking, head back to the farm shop to purchase the delicious strawberries you have picked. They are $12.50 per kg.
To know when the strawberries are ripe and ready to pick, look for berries where three-quarters of the surface is red. To make sure you don’t damage the berry or the plant, it is best to simultaneously pull and twist the fruit using your thumb and forefinger.
Aside from the strawberries, there is plenty more to explore at Beerenberg and beyond. On-site, there is a farm shop selling all the fantastic local produce. Sample the jams, chutneys, sauces, and even a few specialty treats unique to the farm. There’s also a cafe, cooking demonstrations, and space to learn about the history of the farm.
While you are down that way, make a day of it and explore the quaint town of Hahndorf. There’s plenty to see in the German township, take a wander down the main street, and you’ll never know what types of treasures you’ll find.
