Beerenberg Farm is to strawberries what Haighs is the chocolate – iconically South Australian, packed with sweetness, and a must-visit destination when visiting our great state.
There’s nothing better than handpicking a fresh bunch of strawberries on a warm summer’s day, so we’re delighted to announce that Beerenberg’s strawberry farm is now open and ready for picking.
The Adelaide institution has been running strawberry picking sessions since 1975, with thousands of families, couples and friends leaping at the opportunity to hunt for that perfect strawberry every season (November to April).
When planning the best strawberry picking experience, visit the Beerenberg website to confirm the patch is open on your desired date. This is an important step! Occasionally the patch will close if all of the ripe strawberries have been ‘picked out’ or have suffered due to a particularly long spell of hot weather.
Upon arrival, pay a $5 entry fee at the Beerenberg Farm Shop and then you’re good to go! All people 12 years old or younger can enter for free. You’re then welcome to enter the patch and pay for the weight of any berries you pick.
When you’re out in the field, follow the red flags to the patch and pick to your heart’s delight! But be warned – there’s not much shade in the patch, so wear comfortable shoes, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen.
The best strawberries are ripe and ready for the picking when at least three quarters of the berry’s surface has turned from green to red. To ensure you don’t damage the berry or the plant, the best way to pick strawberries is to simultaneously pull and twist the fruit using your thumb and forefinger.
Freshly picked strawberries will last well in the fringe for up to three days. If you can’t quite finish them all, the Beerenberg website does host an array of recipes if you want to freeze your berries to make jam or sweet treats later down the line.
Was Beerenberg ‘picked out’ on your only free day to visit? Never fear! The year-round destination does have a bunch of things to do if the strawberry patch is closed. You’ll be able to find plenty of sauces, relishes, chutneys, and jams at the Beerenberg Farm Shop, as well as farm-made ice cream, a café, and cooking demonstrations galore.
