In what is traditionally a male dominant scene, acclaimed muralist Lisa King is leading the way for female artists and her latest mural is no exception.
Lisa has produced an amazing mural off Pulteney Street which honors the late great singer, songwriter and actor, David Bowie.
In 2016, Lisa created a portrait of Bowie at the Maid Hotel in Stepney and since taking to Adelaide’s backstreets with a group of graffiti friends in 2008, Lisa has created several mindblowing large-scale public works in Adelaide, Darwin and the US.
Lisa said on an Instagram post that despite some weather challenges this is one of her favourite murals she has done.
“A little weather break after getting rained out on the weekend but the most enjoyable times on site have been had, Lisa says.
“The Hurtle Square Triptych series is almost complete.
“Keep your eyes open for more activations around this project soon.”
To most people Lisa’s first piece of art back in 2008 might’ve been just another piece of street art but as she explains this turned out to be groundbreaking.
“It was illegal and exciting to see my illustration up there,” says Lisa,
“My head was like, ‘What is this?
“I want more. It was a sensory overload.
“I was hanging out with a bunch of artists in Adelaide doing graffiti.
“It was a new movement and I didn’t really know anyone, but being able to head to the street and do something like that felt amazing and that anything was possible.
“It’s where the guys hang out. They told me I could sit in with them and watch them do aerosol work, but I wasn’t exactly encouraged to do my thing.
“It was very territorial.”
Despite these challenges, Lisa has gone on to produce several amazing pieces of work around the world. The latest Bowie piece of art is another to add to the impressive list.
