Subject of Adelaide Film Festival feature ‘I Am Woman’, Helen Reddy, has died

The film, which also stars Adelaide actress Tilda Cobham-Hervey in the titular role, takes us through the trials and tribulations of a hopeful young Reddy who arrives in New York in 1966.

The film’s Australian director, Unjoo Moon, has led tributes to the trailblazing singer, regarded by many as the queen of 70s pop.

Most famous for her anthemic chorus of ‘I am Woman, hear me roar,’ from the song ‘I am Woman’ which made her a star, Moon said she became close to the Australian-born icon while planning the bio-pic of the same name, and had spoken to her as recently as last week.

“She just looked radiantly beautiful,” Moon told the Sydney Morning Herald after her death was announced on Wednesday.

“Her skin was glowing and she just looked amazing. She was on her phone and I was on my phone and I spent most of the call walking around my garden showing her things.”

Diagnosed with dementia five years ago, Moon said Reddy in good spirits, and described her music as something that ‘somehow always made women feel stronger and bolder.’

Former Prime Minister Julia Gillard also spoke about the singer who sold tens of millions of albums worldwide. She told ABC readers that Reddy’s lyrics captured how women like to think of ourselves, ‘as strong — and our movement — invincible.’

Set to be screened as part of this year’s Adelaide Film Festival program, the news will surely add extra resonance to its audiences when it shows on October 18 and 23. The film, which also stars Adelaide actress Tilda Cobham-Hervey in the titular role, takes us through the trials and tribulations of a hopeful young Reddy who arrives in New York in 1966.

Inspired by her friendship with legendary rock journalist Lillian Roxon, Reddy soon writes ‘I am Woman’, which galvanizes a generation of women and inspires a second wave of the nascent feminist movement.
