She’s made a name for herself creating large-scale murals in the sand along Adelaide’s beaches with Sue Norman’s ‘sandalas’ drawing huge crowds and a cult-like following online.
Today, Sue has honoured the passing of Her Majesty The Queen through one of her incredible works of art on Brighton Beach.
Etched into the sand using only a stick, the large mural is only a fleeting tribute that will be washed away with the tide to leave us with nothing but memories and a few photos.
Sue started on her ‘sandala’ journey six years ago and has since carved over 500 pieces of work into the sand, her latest of the Queen number 530.
In a post to her Facebook, Sue alerted her followers that it was complete but that time is running out to catch a glimpse.
“A beautiful day to create a memorial sandala for the Queen,” she wrote.
“I loved that at one stage a Monarch butterfly flew across it. It’s still there for a bit longer if you’d like a look and even leave flowers.It should still be there about 4pm.”
For Sue, the process of creating mandalas is not only therapeutic for her but also for those who come and watch her mandalas come to fruition, as it provides them with the space to breathe, something that became more prevelant during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 which saw people from across the world reach out requesting custom mandalas as gifts for friends or family.
