Support Terminally Ill Dad And Bring Sun Safe LEGO Set To Life

Aussie dad Damien MacRae is suffering from aggressive brain cancer and stage 4 skin cancer, and has been given less than 3 months to live, but that hasn’t stopped him from trying to realise a childhood dream.

Aussie dad Damien MacRae is suffering from aggressive brain cancer and stage 4 skin cancer, and has been given less than 3 months to live, but that hasn’t stopped him from trying to realise a childhood dream.

He and 7 year old son Aiden have entered a LEGO competition, to bring their Surf Rescue themed Lego set to life, which would see it sold around the world.

In his competition pitch, Damien says, “I’m Australian and like most Aussies I spent a good portion of my childhood at the beach. I also spent a good portion of my childhood playing with LEGO® and I always wanted to add a beach set to my LEGO® town but could never find one.

“Fast forward a few decades and I’m now playing LEGO® with my 6-year old son Aiden. And we still can’t find a beach set to add to our LEGO® town!

“Then last year I was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma, a form of skin cancer caused by overexposure to the sun.

“So Aiden and I thought we would finally build a beach set and make sure it included heroes that are “sun smart” (wearing hats, sunglasses and sunscreen).”

The fantastic concept can be seen on the LEGO website, and includes everything from the life savers, to the beach transport used by the red & gold heroes, and more.

Currently support for the concept has nearly reached 8,000 people, but in order for the project to reach the LEGO review board, it needs to hit 10,000.

After reaching 10k, the project enters a special phase called the LEGO Review. A review board of set designers and marketing representatives evaluates projects according to their review criteria and hand-picks projects to become new LEGO Ideas sets. They can’t make everything, but every project in review gets a fair shot.

Help Damien and Aiden leave a lasting legacy, which will help generations of kids better understand sun safety, and the work of the Surf Life Savers, and vote for their project here. The system is a little awkward, but it’s for a good cause so push through and do what you can to help!
