Swap the cocktails for caffeine! A morning matcha rave is hitting Adelaide this weekend

Adelaide’s Yuku dō is bringing the global matcha rave phenomenon to Hindley Street, swapping espresso shots for hand-whisked lattes and morning hangovers for feel-good vibes.

Adelaide is about to get a taste of the ‘matcha rave’ craze that’s been taking over Melbourne and beyond, and it’s all happening thanks to a popular Hindley Street sando spot, Yuku dō.

Yuku dō has quickly become a favourite since opening in February, known for its creative matcha drinks and clean aesthetic, and now it’s set to host its first-ever event next weekend. Saturday, November 15th will bring together a very caffeinated morning party, that swaps cocktails for matcha lattes and dance floors for daytime DJs. The idea is inspired by the sober morning rave trend that’s taken off across Asia and around Australia, giving people a way to kickstart their weekend with music, movement and of course a matcha or two.

“Matcha raves are quite a big thing right now,” shared Yuku dō owner Anjelin Lim. “In Sydney they have it almost every other week. Essentially, it’s a sober rave, where people come in the morning, there’s a DJ, and hopefully some very party-type people to bring up the vibe.”

Anjelin and her team have been inspired by these viral morning raves, but are bringing their own twist. There will be special matcha flavours, and of course, a few of the classics to indulge in. Guests can also expect a few surprise snacks, all made exclusively for the event.

“We’ll be doing some small bites, nothing too heavy, because it’s in the morning. We’re keeping those a surprise for now. It’s mostly about celebrating matcha, though. Everyone who comes along will get a free drink with their ticket.”

If you’ve ever tried Yuku dō’s drinks, you’ll know why this cafe has built a loyal following since opening its doors. Their Coconut Matcha Cloud and Signature Matcha with Belgian white chocolate are favourites of the locals, and everything is hand-whisked to make sure it’s silky smooth and delicious.

“All of our matcha is whisked by hand, and we use about seven grams per drink, which is a lot. Our customers tell us ours is stronger and more flavourful than other places. We really care about getting that perfect balance.”

Alongside the drinks, local DJ Nazd will be spinning smooth R&B beats to set the tone for the morning. “He’s actually done a few of these matcha raves in Melbourne,” said Anjelin. “We’re so excited to have him on board.”

The event has been designed to be a bit of a treat and a well-timed breather for local students, many of whom have just wrapped up exam season. “It’s almost like an end-of-term matcha party. It’s a place where students can come, relax for a couple of hours, and then head back to the library. It will definitely break up the day during exam season.”

Whether a morning matcha is your Saturday ritual, or an early dance party sounds like just your sort of thing, Yuku dō’s first ever matcha rave is something you’re not going to want to miss out on. Tickets include entry and a free drink, and with around 40 already snapped up and only a few dozen left, you’ll have to get in quick!
