Swim with giant Cuttlefish at SA’s CuttleFest in Whyalla

Swim and snorkel with giant Cuttlefish in the Upper Spencer Gulf Marine Park as a part of the CuttleFest which runs every year in Whyalla.

Whyalla’s CuttleFest is returning this year, giving local South Australians and tourists a front row experience to the yearly one off event – the breeding of over 100,000 cuttlefish!

Cuttlefish (sepia apama) are intelligent invertebrates related to the octopus, squid, and nautilus. They’re fascinating creatures that can count, exert self-control, and have numerous wily tactics to evade predators.

CuttleFest, a partnership between City of Whyalla, National Parks and Wildlife Service and Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries, celebrates the annual winter aggregation for mating season of hundreds of giant cuttlefish near Whyalla within the Upper Spencer Gulf Marine Park Cuttlefish Coast Sanctuary Zone.

Whyalla is the only known location this happens in the world, making this festival something special.

To truly experience the Cuttlefish’s beauty, snorkelling with the Giant Australian Cuttlefish is a bucket list item! The uniquely South Australian opportunity is world renowned, having been featured in global news stories including David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II.

Guided snorkel tours with the giant cuttlefish is an increasingly popular ‘must do’ item on many people’s bucket list.

South Australia’s premier not-for-profit community snorkelling organisation Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries (EMS) have just announced its CuttleFest 2023 snorkel tours will be held from June 24 through to 16 July.

The amazing experience is located at Stony Point in the Upper Spencer Gulf Marine Park which is also home to a variety of colour plant life, fish, sea lions and dolphins.

You’ll learn about Cuttlefish’s blue blood and see first hand their colourful mating rituals in a safe group environment from nationally accredited snorkel guides.

The tour is widely recognised and has been featured on, As seen on TV!, SA Weekender, David Attenborough’s Blue Planet and Totally Wild.

Each tour lasts for up to 90 minutes (including suiting up in warm wetsuits, safety & cuttlefish behaviour briefing, snorkel and debriefing).

It’s a great family-friendly activity which is suitable for both adults and children (8 years and above) who can swim at least 25m and tread water. Children under 15 years must be accompanied and supervised in water by an adult (no more than 2 children per adult).
