TAFE SA’s free conference will empower women to pursue careers in IT

TAFE SA’s free conference, called “Women ROCK-IT,” will prepare women to forge careers in information technology, a male-dominated industry.

Ok ladies, it’s time to “rock IT!”

TAFE SA’s upcoming free conference, called “Women ROCK-IT,” will empower women to forge careers in information technology (IT), a male-dominated industry.

Guests of the event, which will be held on Friday, 9 April, from 1:45-3.30pm, will hear from numerous women who are challenging stereotypes and who have turned their passion into rewarding IT careers.

The keynote speaker is Miriam Silva, the Chair of the Premier’s Council for Women, and panellists include Kathrine Andersen (Gartner), Paula Oliver (AustCyber) and Eimer Henderson (Prodigy Learning), Rupa Mathur (Pernix), Rhoda Miller-Birkby (DXC) and Deb Farrell (TAFE SA).

The event will be MC’d by Glam Adelaide’s very own CEO, Kelly Noble.

Attendees will get to network with TAFE SA’s female IT lecturers and hear about course information and pathways to careers. There will also be added entertainment and bonuses, of course, such as prizes and giveaways, afternoon tea, and a music performance by TAFE SA music graduates Two of a Kind.

The in-person event is now sold out, but attendees can still join online via Microsoft Teams here.

Prem Paelchen, Senior Information Technology Lecturer at TAFE SA, says now is a great time to start these important conversations.

“IT is a growth industry with great career pathways and job opportunities; The jobs of the future are in this sector,” she says.

“Women have been involved in programming since the get-go, and we want to bring the career and opportunities to the forefront for all women.”

Currently in Australia, females account for only 25 percent of those with post-secondary IT qualifications. Participation in the IT workforce is also lower than across other occupations, with a participation rate of only 28 percent, compared to 45 percent across all professional industries.

“We want to empower women to study IT and consider a career in a male-dominated industry,” Paelchen says.

Tickets are limited, so make sure to register to attend as soon as possible.

If you cannot attend the conference in person, you can join online via Microsoft Teams from 2pm in the link above.

The event will be held at TAFE SA’s Adelaide City Campus, 120 Currie Street.
