The first concert in the 2013 series by acclaimed Adelaide Chamber Singers (ACS) entitled Tales of Two Cities will be held on Saturday 8 June at 6.30pm in St Peter’s Cathedral, North Adelaide and repeated on Sunday 9 June at 3pm in Church of the Epiphany Crafers. The concert then moves to Sydney to complete the ‘two cities’ tour before ACS’s overseas concert tour to Europe and the UK in July.
ACS Artistic Director, Conductor and Founder Carl Crossin said, “The Tales of Two Cities concert sees us joining again with the Sydney Chamber Choir ( SCC) to perform some of the great showpieces of the choral world – the ‘megasonaural’ 40-part motets by the contemporary British composer Gabriel Jackson and his justly famous 16th century countryman Thomas Tallis. Both choirs will also perform on their own in programs featuring new Australian choral music.”
Conducted by Carl Crossin and Paul Stanhope, Tales of Two Cities program will also include other virtuoso music; Hymn to St. Cecilia by Benjamin Britten as they celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth; Cecilia Virgo by Gabriel Jackson; A Strange Land by Joseph Twist; and Hymn to the Virgin by Benjamin Britten.
The ACS’s 2013 program will mark their 17th Subscription Series and their 28th year of music-making in Adelaide. Adelaide Chamber Singers has been a passionate and innovative contributor to music making in Adelaide for twenty-seven years. Formed in 1985 by its Artistic Director and Conductor Carl Crossin, the ensemble comprises some of Adelaide’s best and most experienced ensemble singers, some of whom are also emerging artists or conductors in their own right. Adelaide Chamber Singers is widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading chamber choirs and was recently awarded one of SA’s premier Arts awards, the 2011 Ruby Award for ‘sustained contribution by an organisation’.
Adelaide Chamber Singers has toured Australia on several occasions and has performed at the Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth International Festivals, as well as a range of regional festivals around Australia, including the Bundaleer, Coonawarra, Barossa and Coriole Festivals, the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival and the Musica Viva Huntington Estate Festival in NSW. In 2012, ACS collaborated with the Sydney Chamber Choir in performances of J. S. Bach’s Johannes Passion, conducted by Carl Crossin, as part of the Adelaide Festival and in the Great Hall of Sydney University. ACS also collaborated with the Brisbane Chamber Choir in 2012 with performances at the Brisbane Festival of Contemporary Sacred Music.
Adelaide Chamber Singers has toured internationally and was also Australia’s representative at both the Asia South Pacific Symposium on Choral Music in Singapore in 2001 and at the 6th World Symposium on Choral Music in the USA in 2002. In 2006, Adelaide Chamber Singers won the award of “Choir of the World at Kathaumixw 2006” at the prestigious International Choral Kathaumixw in British Columbia, Canada.
Adelaide Chamber Singers has also received awards for its recordings: the ABC Classics CD recording of Peter Sculthorpe’s Requiem with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra conducted by Arvo Volmer was selected as an Editor’s Choice in the July 2007 edition of the prestigious Gramophone magazine, and the ACS recording (with the ASO conducted by Richard Mills) of Ross Edwards’ Symphony No. 4 “Star Chant” was awarded the “Best Choral/Orchestral Recording of 2008” by the Australian Music Centre.
ACS has given the Adelaide premiere of most of the choral works of Arvo Pärt and performed Arvo Pärt’s Passio under the direction of internationally recognised Pärt specialist, Paul Hillier at the 2007 Adelaide Film Festival. Adelaide Chamber Singers made its film debut in Paul Cox’s 2003 film, Human Touch.
