Three renowned Australian leaders including 2023 Australian of the Year Taryn Brumfitt, leadership coach Mia Handshin, and speaker Dr Gemma Munro have unveiled a new venture, The Oyster Sisters. This initiative is a global coaching and networking community aimed at empowering women through a journey of authentic self-discovery. The trio draws on extensive expertise gained from working with top global brands such as Google, Qantas, and L’Oreal.

Taryn Brumfitt described the venture as a support platform for women “who are ready to wade through life’s challenges”. She said that The Oyster Sisters would help women move towards a more authentic mode of being, by shedding out-dated behaviours. Brumfitt is acclaimed internationally, recognised by platforms including Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls and UN Women, highlighting her influential activism in self-acceptance and body positivity.

The concept of The Oyster Sisters originated four years ago during a fireside conversation where the trio shared personal adversities and leadership challenges. Today, the platform offers resources and coaching to encourage women to navigate life’s challenges, including overcoming burnout and societal expectations to please others.

Dr Gemma Munro, who specialises in performance psychology, highlighted the restrictive nature of traditional work environments for women. She explained that many existing systems discourage authentic behaviours, pushing women to conform to external expectations. Munro noted, “Women are looking for spaces in which they can be courageously who they are rather than needing to play by others’ rules.”

Handshin, discussing the symbolism behind their name, shared that while oysters might not be universally liked, they epitomise a strong symbol of positive transformation. She stressed that The Oyster Sisters aim to guide women in using challenges as leverage for personal growth and to reclaim leadership on their terms. “To reset your thinking about how you approach life is easier when you’re not alone,” Handshin stated.

The launch event held in Adelaide saw an impressive turnout of over 300 supporters and was met with enthusiasm from global audiences. Testimonials from various women, including Lorna Reeves, Founding Director of My Oh My Events and finalist in the UK’s Best Business Women Awards, praised the initiative for its profound impact. Reeves shared that the authenticity and insights provided by The Oyster Sisters were exceptionally empowering and supportive.

With the official launch now underway across Australia and a planned global rollout in September, The Oyster Sisters offers annual memberships. These memberships include monthly 90-minute group coaching sessions, access to inspiring content and practical resources, podcasts, and entry to a private online community. Membership is set at $333 per person per year, with flexible monthly installment plans available to accommodate different budgets.
