Cheese is deeply entwined into the history of Europe’s finest makers, France. A lover of Brie, King Louis XVI himself was captured following the storming of Bastille only when he made a slight detour in his escape route to stop and stock up on his beloved cheese.

Bastille Day is the anniversary of this sacred day in French history that saw the fall of Bastille and is celebrated annually on July 14 with festivities, fireworks and food – including of course, cheese.

While the day may pass some of us by, there are many in Adelaide who celebrate Bastille Day in true form and none do more so than the Smelly Cheese Co.

Located in the Central Markets, the Smelly Cheese Shop is a purveyor of fine French fromage and is known for serving the most pungent yet delicious and authentic cheese. Hailing from France’s Normandie region, Smelly Cheese owner Valerie Henbest’s passion for the delicacy stems from her upbringing, and after migrating to Australia in the early ‘90s she has turned her love for the snack into a lifetime’s work through her popular stall.

In celebration of Bastille Day, Valerie and her team at the Smelly Cheese Shop will be serving up a smorgasbord of activities across the weekend for you to sink your teeth into.

Taste your way through the Smelly Cheese range with complimentary tastings from 10am on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 July and Champagne and Sauternes samples on Saturday. You can also experience the smelliest of cheeses, Epoisses. This pungent little head-turner is so powerful in its smell that it’s banned from public transport in Paris!

Take home a piece of the party with two cheese bundles available so you can create your very own raclette experience or choose four out of our five favourite French cheeses to create the ultimate cheese board for your next dinner party.

For those who can’t make it in-store to experience the festivities, Smelly Cheese is also offering cheese boxes online, with the option to add Champagne, for delivery in time for Bastille Day so you can celebrate at home.

Bastille Day celebrations will take place from Thursday 14th – Saturday 16th July.

The Smelly Cheese Shop is located at Stall 44, Adelaide Central Market, Gouger St, Adelaide.
