If you’ve ever been curious about wines that sit just outside the mainstream, the National Wine Centre’s upcoming tasting event might just be your perfect pour. The Drop In: Reds Edition – The Rise of Alternative Varieties is arriving this July, inviting guests to discover a world of bold, beautiful reds that go well beyond Shiraz.

Andrew Bruce, Head Sommelier at the National Wine Centre of Australia, says these wines are rewriting the rulebook.

“In the Australian wine scene, an ‘alternative varietal’ refers to a grape variety that is not traditionally associated with Australia’s mainstream wine production,” he explains.

“These varietals sit outside the so-called big six — Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling — which have historically dominated the market.”

More than just a novelty, alternative reds are rising stars thanks to their sustainability, complexity and food-friendly nature.

“They represent a convergence of sustainability, innovation and evolving consumer tastes. As the wine landscape adapts to environmental and market pressures, these grapes offer a promising and dynamic path forward,” Andrew says.

Guests attending the tasting will be able to sample everything lots of varietals that originate from these countries, Blaufränkisch (Austria) and Mencia (Spain) and Barbera to Aglianico (Italy). Expect distinctive characters and layered textures, with flavours that take you somewhere new.

“Wines like Aglianico and Blaufränkisch offer more savouriness, natural acidity and structural uniqueness,” Andrew says.

“They appeal to drinkers seeking nuance, freshness and food compatibility over richness and weight.”

It’s also an event designed to surprise and delight whilst being a showcase of Australian wines.

“What’s most exciting is facilitating that ‘aha’ moment, when someone steps outside the familiar and connects with a wine that challenges, delights and expands their palate,” Andrew says.

“It’s the heart of why many sommeliers do what they do.”

With more winemakers embracing this style, Andrew says alternative varietals are shifting from curiosity to cornerstone.

“They’re shaping the future face of Australian wine, one vibrant, textured, climate-ready glass at a time.”

Two standout producers to watch are Wangolina (Limestone Coast) and Hahndorf Hill Winery (Adelaide Hills).

“Wangolina showcases bold expressions of Lagrein, Carmenère and Mencía,” he says.

“Hahndorf Hill leads with refined Austrian reds like Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt. These wines offer exciting opportunities to engage guests with conversation-worthy styles beyond the mainstream.”

Andrew believes South Australia is perfectly placed to bring these grapes to life.

“Our climate and terroir allow alternative varieties to fully ripen while retaining freshness,” he says.

“Whether it’s elevation-driven aromatics or warm-climate suitability, these wines are flavourful, structured and deeply drinkable.”

For anyone curious but unsure where to start, Andrew suggests beginning with familiar textures and flavours. “

“Start with styles similar to what you already enjoy and don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations. Stay open-minded. Each glass is an opportunity to explore something new and exciting.”

Tickets include unlimited tastings, a complimentary Spiegelau glass, and the chance to explore over a dozen producers. The wine scene is evolving, and this is your chance to taste the future.
