Tasting Australia Dishes Up Kids ‘Taste Buds’ Cooking And Food Sessions This Sunday

‘Taste Buds’ food education program for kids wraps up this Sunday with Tasting Australia after huge success.

The end of Tasting Australia is looming and it’s been one of the best year’s yet.

One of the things we loved most about this year was the fantastic education food program for kids, called Taste Buds.

Sponsored by San Remo Macaroni Co and KR Castlemaine Fresh Pork and supported by the Bone Health Foundation, it’s designed to educate children in a fun and hands on way about healthy eating habits and also teaching children about where their food comes from.

The program aims to show kids that food doesn’t originate from the shops (or freezers!), and to educate our children and their palates. It’s about helping them to find a love for healthy food and cooking and also a love for getting out to the garden and gaining a satisfaction from growing their own fruit and vegetables.

The Taste Buds program has a great team of people hosting the sessions, including Sprout Cooking School, Sophie Thomson from ABC Gardening, Kirsty Shadiac from ArtVenture and Kate Hubmayer, Author of Nature Craft for Aussie Kid.

Sophie Thomson says “Many people believe that there is a direct link between kids spending 4.5-5 hours a day in front of a screen yet only 2 hours a day outside, with the scary fact that 25% of Australian kids are classified as obese or overweight and 14% of kids suffering from mental illnesses such as ADHD. The solution is to help kids replace screen time with outside or ‘Green’ time’. A great way to do this is to connect kids with gardening and in particular growing at least some of their own fruits and vegetables. This educates them about where their food comes from, how to make healthy food choices, and when they do grow something edible in the backyard, food miles can become food metres.”

TASTE BUDS will run 3 different classes over 3 days.
