If there’s one thing Adelaide does exceptionally well, it’s blending old-world charm with modern flavour. And this May, we’re being treated to a very special evening that does exactly that.
On Wednesday 7 May, Penny Blue at the Adelaide Marriott Hotel, will open its doors for a one-night-only dinner to celebrate an impressive 153 years since the grand old General Post Office first began its story in the heart of the city.
“We are thrilled to announce a three-year partnership with Tasting Australia, reinforcing Marriott’s continued commitment in promoting Adelaide as a premier destination for exceptional produce, dining, and hospitality,” said Paul Gallop, General Manager, Adelaide Marriott Hotel.
“To mark this exciting collaboration, we will celebrate the 153rd birthday of the GPO building with a special nostalgic dinner at Penny Blue, our signature restaurant.”

Penny Blue, nestled inside the historic GPO building and now part of the sparkling new Marriott Hotel, is serving up more than just a meal. This is a nod to the past with a fork firmly planted in the present.
The venue itself oozes heritage charm, but the food is all about reimagined classics that deliver the kind of nostalgia you actually want on a plate.

Guests will be greeted with a glass of sparkling wine and a freshly shucked Coffin Bay oyster, because let’s be honest, if you’re going to start a celebration, that’s a pretty delicious way to do it. From there, you’ll move into a four-course dinner that reads like a love letter to comfort food.
There’s a prawn cocktail making a well-deserved comeback, reminding us all why it was the peak of sophistication in its heyday.
The real highlight of the night is a perfectly executed Beef Wellington. Golden pastry, blushing centre, rich and indulgent without being over the top. It’s the kind of dish you rarely see done well anymore, but here it’s getting the star treatment it deserves.

Each course will be paired with wines from Hentley Farm, and if you’ve had the pleasure of sipping anything from their Barossa range, you’ll know this is a pairing worth turning up for.
There’s also something a bit special about the timing. This dinner doesn’t just honour the GPO’s history, it also celebrates the Marriott Hotel’s first year as the official hotel partner for Tasting Australia. That means all the international chefs and culinary talent heading to Adelaide for the festival will be calling the Marriott home during their stay.
It’s a bit of a feather in the cap for both the hotel and the festival, and a nice little local win worth toasting.
