Since the 16th century, maritime tattoos have been popular amongst sailors, seafarers, and pirates alike. Imagery such as swallows, nautical stars, mermaids, and anchors all have symbolic meanings that have lived on for centuries. Now, the History Trust of South Australia is giving tattoo lovers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the history of getting inked.
The event, entitled ‘Inked’, will be hosted by the South Australian Maritime Museum. Partnering with popular, traditional tattoo studio, Black Diamond Tattoo, the event will explore the gritty history of maritime tattooing, such as how tattoo ink used to be made with soot and gunpowder.
The History Trust’s Manager, Curatorial, Adam Paterson will give guests an in-depth look at this rich history and its relationship to the 21st century.
“When we think of sailors’ and seafarers’ tattoos we tend to conjure up those great figures from popular culture, like Popeye and Captain Jack Sparrow, here’s a long history of tattooing that had meaning for sailors and was often symbolic of their chosen craft,” says Adam.
“Tattooing was popular among the South Australian crews of Windjammers and age was no barrier. One of the youngest sailors, Alan Rogerson was decorated with several striking maritime tattoos by the time he was 16.
“Tattoo styles and techniques have progressed and become much safer and less permanent in 2022, but there are still traditions that hold strong.”
Black Diamond will be hosting live tattooing demonstrations, as well as giving one lucky guest the opportunity to win a free tattoo with one of their talented artists. To enter the competition, click here.
Owner of Black Diamond Kelly McKinnon said, “Black Diamond Tattoo is proud to be a part of the Inked event with the SA Maritime Museum. The history of tattooing is a fascinating part of our industry. We look forward to sharing this with the community”.
For something less permanent, Adelaide’s favourite glitter queen Calamity Tash will be providing temporary tattoos on the night.
All ticket holders will get a free drink on the night thanks to Pirate Life Brewing, and there will also be a beverage service on the night for those not being tattooed. What’s more, guests will also be able to dig into some unreal gourmet pizza from The Woodfired Pizza Co, while bopping along to live entertainment by DJ Tommy Tequila.
Inked is the first of a new event series called Salty Sessions, supported by Port Adelaide Enfield Council. Salty Sessions aims to promote as many local businesses as possible and to boost the recognition and popularity of the Port as a recreational hub.
