TDU News: André the Giant Returns to Defend Tour Title

2010 champion and two-time Santos Tour Down Under winner André Greipel will return to Adelaide in January 2011 to defend his title.

Santos Tour Down Under Race Director Mike Turtur today confirmed that Greipel will debut with his new team, Omega Pharma-Lotto, at the race in South Australia on 16-23 January 2011.

“It’s great to see last year’s champion return to defend his title, which has been a tradition of our race each year,” says Mike Turtur.

“Greipel is a formidable sprinter and our race suits him well, so it will be interesting to see if he can be the first rider to win three editions of the Santos Tour Down Under.”

The Santos Tour Down Under will be Greipel’s first race for Omega Pharma-Lotto since leaving HTC-Columbia at the end of the 2010 season. He’ll be joined by his former teammates Adam Hansen and Marcel Sieberg.

“Everyone will be watching to see how Greipel fits with his new team and to gauge his chances for the rest of the season and in particular his first Tour de France,” says MikeTurtur.

“He’ll be riding with a strong team in Adelaide with great support from the likes of Mario Aerts and Jürgen Roelandts, who won the Cycle Instead Young Rider Jersey here last year.

“It’s good to see Aussie Adam Hansen heading back to Adelaide. He had a bad crash at this year’s Tour de France, breaking his collarbone, sternum and a rib but he’s made a great recovery and is tipped to be Greipel’s new lead-out man.”

The 2011 Santos Tour Down Under will be held in Adelaide and regional South Australia from 16-23 January 2011. For further information visit www.tourdownunder.com.au
