TDU News: Jack Bobridge, Team Garmin-Cervélo, to Ride in Home Event

South Australians will soon have the opportunity to see local lad and newly crowned Australian Road Race Champion Jack Bobridge compete at the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under with US-based team Garmin-Cervélo.

Bobridge, who won the national title earlier today, will return to Adelaide later this week to race with the new cycling outfit Garmin-Cervèlo.

UniSA-Australia has also announced that their final rider for the Santos Tour Down Under will be Bernard Sulzberger. He won his position through his great form at the 2011 Mars Cycling Australia Road National Championships, which finish on Tuesday in Ballarat. Sulzberger will join his brother Wesley in the UniSA-Australia team.

“South Australians are proud to welcome the return of one of our own elite riders at the State’s biggest cycling event,” Santos Tour Down Under Race Director Mike Turtur says of Bobridge.

“Since debuting with the Australian national team, UniSA-Australia, at our race in 2009, Bobridge has gone on to great success and recently won gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in both the team pursuit and individual pursuit.

“Racing on home soil often gives cyclists a boost, so I’d expect Bobridge to put in a good performance for the home crowd.”

Adelaide-born Bobridge was the 2007 Australian Junior Male Road Cycling Champion of the Year, and represented Australia at the Beijing Olympic Games and the World Track Championships.

In 2009, Bobridge was the Under-23 UCI World Time Trial Champion and he made his professional cycling debut with Garmin-Transitions at the 2010 Santos Tour Down Under. The team will be officially known as Garmin-Cervélo for the 2011 season.

“Garmin-Cervélo is fielding a team with a strong Australian presence at the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under. Among other Aussies joining Bobridge in the race are Cameron Meyer and his younger brother Travis,” says Mike Turtur.

“Together, the brothers are a formidable force. Cameron claimed gold alongside Bobridge in the Team Pursuit at the Commonwealth Games in India, and Travis is a former Australian Road Race Champion.”

Garmin-Cervélo’s line-up will include sprint star Tyler Farrar, who will be racing in the Santos Tour Down Under for the first time.Team Manager Matthew White (AUS) will be leading the Garmin-Cervélo team for the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under with the following riders:

Tyler Farrar (USA) Julian Dean (NZL) Jack Bobridge (AUS) Matthew Wilson (AUS)
