Coffee is like a oxygen to us. We need it. Every day. So, when we heard about a new little coffee shop with a difference, we just had to push everyone out of the way and run there. Immediately.
Tell Henry is set up in a warehouse. That is an actual warehouse, not just a space turned into a ‘warehouse’. The whole setup is actually quite unique. Half of the warehouse is the cafe and the other half is an open plan office where a creative agency works. Basically the only thing separating the coffee drinkers and the workers is a very cool custom made steel curtain.
We wanted to know more about how this concept had come about and after talking to Brad Bonar, the lovely Canadian barista behind the coffee machine we learnt a few things. He and his partner, designer Sharon Mackay, worked on the whole idea with Tobin Lush, the Founder of design firm Rodeo. Rodeo just so happens to be that creative agency sharing the space that we mentioned above. All pretty clever, hey?
Now you might be thinking but guys if it is an open warehouse, isn’t it freezing? Well no, it isn’t. Because there are huge bar heaters throughout the warehouse to keep you toasty and warm while it is still a bit on the chilly side. They thought of everything!
This place is busy all day! Like, really busy! The only reason a place can be that busy, as far as we are concerned, is because it is good! The coffee is lovingly made using beans from boutique Melbourne roaster Industry beans and an Italian La Marzocco coffee machine. The result. Coffee perfection. We will have three (and we may have had three…).
With the popularity of this place on the up and up, we wouldn’t be surprised if we see a larger range of food available very soon, but in the meantime you can only get a few things with your delicious coffee. However, when those few things are bagels, we aren’t complaining!
We indulged in the plain bagel with dill cream cheese. Heavenly. Also available on the day we visited was a sesame or blueberry bagel with the option of plain cream cheese rather than dill. There are also a few little sweet treats including gingerbread men and brownies to end your bagel and coffee experience on an even sweeter note.
Cool side note: the warehouse that this place is set up in used to be a table making factory. A lot of the amazing tables you might see around in Adelaide bars and restaurants probably came from that very warehouse!
The edgy vibe, uniqueness of the set up and the fantastic coffee will certainly see us back to Tell Henry very soon. Coffee lovers, put this one in your must get to list! We can’t wait to see this place as the weather warms up…
