That Hailstorm? Yeah, It Was The Largest Insurance Event Ever Recorded

You all remember that epic hail storm from the other week? The one with golf ball sized hail which blasted the state? Well it’s cost a fortune in insurance claims.

You all remember that epic hail storm from the other week? The one with golf ball sized hail which blasted the state? Yes? Well while the Friday 11 November hail storm lasted only minutes, it was the largest insurance event ever recorded by RAA Insurance in its 28 year history.

“So far we’ve received more than 6,000 insurance claims estimated at $8M, and there’s no sign of it slowing down,” said Hayley Cain RAA’s Claims Senior Manager.

“We’ve hired extra staff, and also flown in experienced Claims staff from our sister Club, the RAC WA to help manage the additional calls and to process the high volume of claims,” said Ms Cain.

With more than 4,000 of the claims received for motor vehicles, RAA has also set up three hail damage assessment centres in metropolitan Adelaide to fast track the Claims process, providing members with both assessments and repair bookings within 15 minutes.

“More than 400 members had their vehicles assessed at these centres last week. Again, we’re expecting many more vehicles to go through these centres over the coming weeks.

“We’ve also flown additional vehicle assessors to Broken Hill where we expect to assess around 1,000 vehicles,” said Ms Cain.

While hail damaged cars are generally mechanically safe to drive, it is illegal to drive vehicles with broken or cracked glass such as windscreens or headlights.

“If your vehicle is damaged, it’s best to have it assessed as soon as you can.

“To organise an appointment at our hail assessment centres you will need to first lodge a claim via our website or telephone.

“We’re doing everything possible to speed up our assessment and claims processing to minimise inconvenience to our members, and we really appreciate everyone’s patience,” said Ms Cain.
