Thatchers Gold has scooped the cider awards pool at the fourth annual Australian Cider Awards, held in Melbourne’s CBD last Friday.

The premium English cider, which is kegged by Coopers Brewery and distributed in Australia by both Coopers and Premium Beverages, won three of the major trophies:

– Winner, Best in Show
– Winner, Best Cider
– Winner, Best International Cider/Perry

This is the first time Thatchers Gold has entered the Australian Cider Awards since launching in Australia in January of 2014.

It was up against 150 other Australian and International entries across a record 17 categories.

The judges, chaired by Gary Baldwin and guest expert Malcolm Reeves from New Zealand, said Thatchers was chosen as Best in Show because it showed “complex spiced apple characters and aromas– a lovely example of a medium cider in the traditional style.”

Thatchers MD – and fourth generation cidermaker, Martin Thatcher believes “This is a result of the unique and traditional family recipe used to make Thatchers Gold, including the use of cider apples harvested from Thatchers own Somerset orchards. The balanced taste means Thatchers Gold is perfectly matched with food, especially spicy flavours – our recent sponsorship of Good Food Month in Sydney and Melbourne is testament to our belief in the brand’s potential in Australia.”

“We are honoured that the Australian Cider Awards have named us not just Best International Cider, but Best in Show. We would like to thank them and all our new customers in Australia for their continuing support of our cider.”

The Australian Cider Awards, organised by Cider Australia – the national association of Cider and Perry growers and producers – are aimed at showcasing and celebrating the best apple and pear ciders available across the country. They are open to all locally produced and imported ciders.

This year’s gala prize ceremony was held at the Kelvin Club in Melbourne last Friday 10 October.

Coopers National Sales and Marketing Director, Mr Cam Pearce, said Coopers was thrilled with the result.

“Thatchers Gold won every possible category it could in this year’s Australian Cider Awards,” Mr Pearce said.

“To be named “Best in Show”, “Best Cider” and “Best International Cider/Perry” against 150 other key industry players in Australia and globally, is an exceptional result.

“We are delighted to know the cider industry holds Thatchers Gold in such high regard.”

Thatchers is a fourth generation family business crafting cider on its family farm in Somerset, England. From the days when cider was given as part of the farmworkers’ wages, cidermaking skills have been passed down through the family, secret recipes shared and crafts perfected.

The result is the Thatchers of today, still pressing its apples on the same family farm, immensely proud of its heritage, and its mantra of securing a sustainable business for future generations by crafting heritage ciders with great taste and character.
