Telstra has had an epic blast from the past on their hands, and thanks to the community, the mystery has almost been solved! Remember 1985? That fluro fashion, cassette tapes, scratch & sniff stickers, desert boots, and mullet haircut year?
Well, a group of 10 Adelaide school kids, all turning 10 that year, buried a time capsule for Telecom (now Telstra) to mark their 10th anniversary.
Fast forward 40 years, and that capsule is set to be cracked open on July 1, 2025.
Michael Patterson, Telstra Regional General Manager says “This time capsule is a real time-travel moment – a chance to look back at how far we’ve come in 40 years, not just in terms of technology, but in how we connect with each other.”
The best part? Telstra has now found almost all 10 of the original “time capsule kids!” Their identities will be revealed soon, and we can’t wait to hear their memories of growing up in Adelaide in 1985.
These young legends sealed their memories in a time capsule, and Telstra is gearing up to reunite them for the big moment.
Just imagine the excitement of opening it up and seeing what the kids of 1985 left for the future.
From VHS tapes to Telecom swag, who knows what gems will be found?
The ‘80s were full of iconic moments, from the launch of the first Nintendo Entertainment System, to the debut of Back to the Future in cinemas, the rise of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and the unforgettable craze of the Rubik’s Cube. Not to mention the TV hits like Transformers, The Smurfs, and Care Bears.
Now, it’s time to relive these epic memories in the best possible way… the way kids saw the 1980s.
“We don’t know exactly what’s inside – and that’s part of the magic. Each child added a message, and we’re hoping they might remember what they included, or even what else we might find in there,” added Michael.
A major event is planned for July 1, 2025, to open the time capsule, and it’s going to be an unforgettable journey back in time.
Telstra hopes to bring as many of the original participants as possible to relive that magic, share their memories, and reflect on how much the world has changed since 1985. From Walkmans to smartphones, and fax machines to the rise of social media, the journey Telstra has taken in 40 years is pretty mind-blowing.
