The Adelaide Hills Shiraz crowned Australia’s best

Shaw + Smith’s Balhannah Vineyard Shiraz was recently recognised at the International Wine Challenge, taking home four awards.

Balhannah’s Shaw + Smith have walked away winners at the latest International Wine Challenge in London with their 2021 Shaw + Smith Balhannah Vineyard Shiraz securing four prestigious trophies, including the coveted title of Best Australian Red.

Additionally, it received accolades as the recipient of the South Australian Red Trophy, South Australian Shiraz Trophy, and the Adelaide Hills Shiraz Trophy.

“I can’t believe that our little block of Shiraz behind the winery at Balhannah has done what it has. Four trophies, including taking out the coveted Australian Red Trophy,” Shaw + Smith CEO Adam Wadewit said.

“We have always loved that special ironstone hill and the way that it can express Shiraz from our place. It’s so good for our whole team to have their passion and hard work rewarded in London at the IWC. We can’t wait to share a bottle to celebrate.”

Celebrating its 40th year, The International Wine Challenge (IWC) stands as one of the globe’s foremost wine competitions, renowned for its impartiality and meticulous judging process. Every wine undergoes a blind assessment, with each judged on its adherence to style, region, and vintage.

Established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw, Shaw + Smith has been dedicated to crafting exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of the cooler Hills climate. Their focus lies on varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Shiraz. With three vineyards located in Lenswood, Piccadilly, and Balhannah, Shaw + Smith priorities sustainable vineyard management, ensuring vine and soil health while maintaining low yields to produce the finest grapes.

Planted in 2005, the Balhannah Vineyard Shiraz block joins Shaw + Smith’s iconic single vineyard trio, alongside Lenswood Vineyard Chardonnay and the Lenswood Vineyard Pinot Noir.

This vineyard, which served as the origin for Shaw + Smith’s inaugural single vineyard release in 2013, stands out for its unique characteristics.

Embarking on their winemaking journey with their inaugural vintage in 1990, Shaw + Smith expanded their operations in 1999 with the acquisition of a property in Balhannah. Here, they planted vines and constructed a state-of-the-art winery and tasting room, ready for the 2000 vintage. Over the years, Michael and Martin have assembled an exceptional team, including Master of Wine and Joint CEO David LeMire, Senior Winemaker and Joint CEO Adam Wadewitz, CFO Grant Lovelock, and Group Viticulturist Murray Leake, further solidifying Shaw + Smith’s position as a leader in Australian winemaking.
