The Annex Cafe is Glenelg’s hidden gem with a community focus

Tucked away on the backstreets of Glenelg, The Annex Cafe, is one of South Australia’s sweetest spots for all things breakfast, brunch and coffee.

Tucked away in the heart of the stunning seaside town of Glenelg lies The Annex Cafe – a sweet spot for all things breakfast, brunch and coffee.

The recognised RSPCA pet-friendly cafe is located just off of Glenelg’s Jetty Road. It brings a strong sense of community to the bustling bayside town and is the perfect place to catch up with friends.

The Annex Cafe is the brainchild of George Koritsa, who worked as a chef for many years before purchasing the eatery in 2017. George took to the café scene as he wanted to return to a career that is centred around human interaction.

“I trained as a chef in the UK and worked at many food places before moving onto something else,” said George.

“I wanted to come back to an area that I enjoy. Cafe interactions are very people-focused.

“We all enjoy the experience of having a delicious meal, and we all need to eat so I wanted to make it as enjoyable as possible.”

As a token of goodwill, The Annex Cafe houses a purple bin. Purple bins are supplied by an organisation called ‘With Love and Kindness’ which provide emergency packs to women escaping domestic violence.

“We collect underwear, socks, toiletries, feminine products and more to donate,” said George.

The Annex Cafe is a welcoming space for everyone.

“I love welcoming the community,” said George.

“Every third Thursday of the month we host a community group through ECH.

“We have a free book exchange where people can come in and grab a coffee and a new book and then drop one off the next time they come in.”

Dishing up all-day favourites, The Annex Cafe prides itself on its menu diversity and the ability to cater to most dietary requirements.

“We have a focus on healthy options, light meals and breakfast meals,” said George.

“There’s a separate vegan menu in addition to our regular menu.

“We have a very strong Gluten Free menu. Whilst we do have gluten available most things can be made without gluten.”

The Annex Cafe makes all of their own meals, smoothies, juices and coffees on-site, meaning you’ll be able to dig into the freshest produce.

If you’re in a big brekky mood, you’ll be able to treat yourself to a delightful smorgasbord of free-range eggs, bacon, sausages, mushroom, slow-roasted herb tomato, homemade beans, atop of organic sourdough toast.

If you’re feeling like something a little lighter, there’s an array of smoothie bowls, wraps and toasties to choose from.

If you’re more in the lunching mood, there are ample options to pick from, with tomato and pesto bruschetta, zoodles, vegan lasagne and more on the menu.

Harnessing his innate talent to create fresh flavoursome dishes, George creates all of his delicious meals in house.

The Annex Cafe also doubles as an art studio, with the walls covered in paintings supplied by local creatives. The cosy cafe also sells earrings and masks made by members of the community.

The Annex Cafe is a certified green cafe, meaning George and his team ensure they meet international requirements of sustainability.

The Annex Cafe opens its shop doors to eager customers daily between 8am-3pm Monday to Saturday and 9.30-2.30 pm Sunday.
