The Ardrossan Crabbing Competition is back this Australia Day

Show off your expert skills or learn some new ones at the 2025 Ardrossan Crabbing Competition this Australia Day.

Back by popular demand, the Ardrossan Crabbing Competition is back in full swing this upcoming Australia Day for it’s second rodeo, bringing a competitive atmosphere to the Ardrossan jetty with multiple prizes up for grabs. Set against the backdrop of Ardrossan’s dramatic red cliffs and golden beaches, the crabbing competition promises fun, community spirit, and plenty of opportunity to catch the day’s biggest prize.

Now gearing up for its second outing, the Yorke Peninsula’s premier crabbing competition offers beginners and seasoned crabbing veterans alike the chance to show off their skills or learn some new ones along the way.

The day kicks off with registrations opening up from 8am to 10am in the Ardrossan jetty car park. Make sure to arrive early or register ahead of time, because the jetty is only so long, and all the best spots will be swiftly snatched up. Participants can also crab from the beach, or head out onto the water in a boat.

Then, participants will spend the next few hours catching as many crabs as they can. At 3pm, the crabbing will cease, and the official weigh-in will be held in the car park until 5pm. Finally, at 5:30pm, the prize winners will be announced at the awards presentation, held in the Ardrossan Town Square. And after the winners have received their prizes, all participants can grab a bite to eat at the sausage sizzle.

Prizes for crabs caught from the jetty, from the beach, or from boating expeditions are all on offer. During the weigh-in, organisers will measure crab weight, carapace size, and claw span to determine the largest crabs.

Located about 150 kilometres west of Adelaide, Ardrossan is a quaint seaside town on the east coast of the Yorke Peninsula. Despite its small size and population, Ardrossan is home to a thriving hub of rich marine life, agriculture, and impressive scenery. The town’s imposing red cliffs, fishing spots, shipwrecks, and abundant blue swimmer crabs make it a popular holiday destination.

It doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced crabber or just a beginner, because the Ardrossan Crabbing Competition is more than just a day battling it out on the jetty: it’s a celebration of the local environment and culture, outdoor fun, and love for the water. Grab your crabbing gear, bring along the family, and make your way to Ardrossan on Australia Day for a memorable outing on the shore.
