The Australian Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty Makes It’s SA Debut

The Australian Ballet is returning to Adelaide with the award-winning production of The Sleeping Beauty. Prepare to be enchanted by a magical world full of elegant courtiers, charming fairies and colourful storybook characters!

Adelaide—prepare to be enchanted by a world of elegant courtiers, charming fairies, and colourful storybook characters! The Australian Ballet is returning to Adelaide with The Sleeping Beauty at our Adelaide Festival Centre from 6 to 12 July.

David McAllister’s widely acclaimed production had epic sell-out seasons in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, so we recommend not sleeping on this opportunity—it will be an array of delights for lovers of dance, music, and design!

Expect exquisite details, sumptuous sets, and costumes dreamed up by award-winning designer Gabriela Tylesova. The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra brings the story of Sleeping Beauty to life with Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s music, which has been labelled as one of the greatest ballet scores of all time. This is definitely an unmissable show!

This magnificent production by McAllister tells the beloved story of Princess Aurora, who pricks her finger on a spindle and falls into a deep sleep, which can only be broken by true love’s kiss. McAllister’s interpretation remains faithful to the spirit of the original choreography by the 19th-century master Marius Petipa. McAllister promises that audiences will be thrilled by the famously challenging balances of Princess Aurora’s Rose Adage, her romantic wedding grand pas de deux with the Prince, and the lively variations of the couple’s storybook friends!

Theatre designer Gabriela Tylesova’s richly imaginative sets and costumes have captivated audiences around the world with her and have been honoured with multiple Helpmann and Green Room Awards. Her designs for The Sleeping Beauty evoke the splendour of a Louis XIV court—her opulent gilded sets frame hundreds of colourful costumes, each with the style and detail of haute couture. Satin, tulle and silk are adorned with beads and faux fur, sequins and braid, crystals and cut-out lace. We’ve got hearts in our eyes just looking at the images of her designs!

McAllister says he is beyond excited to be returning to Adelaide with The Sleeping Beauty and so are we! The Australian Ballet has been performing in Adelaide since 1962, but this is the first time they will be showcasing The Sleeping Beauty!

A magical journey for all ages, you won’t want to miss the magical dream that is The Sleeping Beauty Adelaide.
